The links of stress, substance use and socio-demographic factors with domestic violence during the Covid-19 pandemic in Portugal

Summary: This study investigates the association between perceived stress, substance use, socio-demographic factors and domestic violence during the COVID-19 pandemic in Portugal. The results show that perceived financial difficulties, use of medications to sleep or calm down, and perceived stress are responsible for domestic violence exposure during the pandemic. Younger age and alcohol consumption are also associated with a higher risk of domestic violence victimization.

Perspective Piece Exploring Challenges to COVID-19 Vaccination in the Darfur Region of Sudan

Summary: The current COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted the ability of health systems in Sudan's Darfur region, which has already been devastated by war, to provide essential services and administer the COVID-19 vaccine. The war has led to collapsing healthcare infrastructure, shortages of healthcare workers, inadequate storage facilities for medicines and medical products, and limited access to healthcare services. Although Sudan has received the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, challenges such as lack of storage and transportation facilities, vaccination hesitancy, inequity in distribution, and shortage of healthcare professionals due to insecurity and instability have hampered the effective delivery and use of the vaccine in Darfur. It is crucial for all stakeholders and actors to address these challenges in order to successfully manage the impact of COVID-19 in the region.

Summary: This study investigates the mutual relationship between the agenda of the World Health Organization (WHO) and its Twitter followers during the COVID-19 pandemic using the network agenda-setting model. The results show that the WHO had an overall effect on different types of Twitter users on identified topics, and Twitter users also influenced some topics in the WHO. This research extends theorizing on agenda setting and highlights the two-way or multiway effect of agenda setting on social media.

Psychiatric hospitalization in Korea, 2011-2020: the impact of the Mental Health Act revision of 2017 in consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic

Summary: The study found that the number of inpatients and inpatient days for schizophrenia decreased between 2017 and 2019, while the number of outpatients and outpatient visits increased during the same period. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 led to a general decrease in healthcare use, but the number of outpatients for schizophrenia slightly increased after the pandemic. Difference-indifferences analysis showed that the law revision was associated with the decrease in the use of inpatient care for schizophrenia after adjusting for the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Primary care and cancer: an analysis of the impact and inequalities of the COVID-19 pandemic on patient pathways

Summary: This study explores the routes to cancer diagnosis and reveals the inequality in the reduction of new cancer detection since the start of the pandemic. Primary care contacts and urgent cancer referrals in England have decreased by 11.6% and 20.2% respectively, while first treatments for newly diagnosed cancers have decreased by 16.3%. The reduction in referrals and treatments has been most significant for those living in poorer areas despite a smaller reduction in primary care contact. These findings further highlight the strain on primary care and the presence of the inverse care law.

Maternal mortality ratio in China from 1990 to 2019: trends, causes and correlations
