Highly Reactive Cationic Molybdenum Alkylidyne N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalysts for Alkyne Metathesis

Jonas Groos et al.

Summary: This study synthesized two tetracoordinated cationic molybdenum alkylidyne N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes, which exhibited excellent catalytic activity and productivity in alkyne metathesis, even in the presence of functional groups. The presence of a triflate group and preformation of a cationic molybdenum center in these complexes significantly increased catalyst activity and productivity compared to neutral congeners.

An Alkyne-Metathesis-Based Approach to the Synthesis of the Anti-Malarial Macrodiolide Samroiyotmycin A

Ektoras Yiannakas et al.

Summary: This study presents the first total synthesis of samroiyotmycin A (1), a C-2-symmetric 20-membered anti-malarial macrodiolide isolated from Streptomyces sp, using a convergent synthetic strategy. The challenging alkyne metathesis sequence is achieved using the latest generation of molybdenum alkylidynes, followed by conversion to the required E-alkenes using contemporary hydrometallation chemistry.

Impact of Ligands and Metals on the Formation of Metallacyclic Intermediates and a Nontraditional Mechanism for Group VI Alkyne Metathesis Catalysts

Richard R. Thompson et al.

Summary: Recent research has revealed that metallacyclobutadienes are not the only intermediates in alkyne metathesis, but instead dynamic metallatetrahedranes. These species are thermodynamically more stable and have modest barriers for cycloaddition, with factors such as metal identity, ligand flexibility, secondary coordination sphere, and substrate identity influencing isolable intermediates. Dispersion-corrected DFT calculations shed light on the role of ligand and metal on the intermediacy of metallacyclobutadiene and metallatetrahedrane, and their implications to alkyne metathesis.

Manuel L. Zier et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of siloxide ligands on the stability and reactivity of molybdenum alkylidyne complexes, with experimental determination of thermodynamic parameters and crystal structure analysis of selected complexes. It was confirmed that these complexes act as active catalysts with selectivity in the metathesis of internal alkynes and diynes.

Spectroscopic and Theoretical Study on Siloxy-Based Molybdenum and Tungsten Alkylidyne Catalysts for Alkyne Metathesis

Alexander Haack et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different ligand systems and metal centers on the geometric and electronic structure of alkyne metathesis intermediates, using spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculations. The findings suggest that effective catalysis can only be achieved by preventing factors that over-stabilize reaction intermediates.
