Vision impairment and cognitive decline among older adults: a systematic review

Niranjani Nagarajan et al.

Summary: The majority of studies reviewed in this systematic review suggest an association between vision impairment and cognitive decline, cognitive impairment, or dementia among older adults. This highlights the need for further research to understand the underlying mechanisms and test interventions to mitigate the cognitive consequences of vision impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment with Lewy bodies: blood perfusion with arterial spin labelling

Michael J. Firbank et al.

Summary: This study used arterial spin labelling to investigate perfusion differences in MCI-LB compared to MCI-AD and healthy controls. The results showed reduced perfusion in specific brain regions in MCI-LB, as well as differences in perfusion ratios compared to MCI-AD and controls. Overall, the perfusion patterns in MCI-LB were similar to those seen in dementia with Lewy bodies.

Cerebellar correlates of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease and Charles Bonnet Syndrome

Timothy Lawn et al.

Summary: Hallucinations are perceptual experiences in the absence of external stimuli, shared features between eye-disease and Parkinson's disease. Structural changes in the cerebellum have been linked to visual hallucinations, independent of specific mechanisms. Lower GMV in cerebellar lobule VIII and IX/VII was observed in hallucinators, with PD patients showing more significant reductions in Crus 1 GMV. Additionally, PD patients exhibited lower WMV in the medulla in relation to hallucinations.

White matter abnormalities of right hemisphere attention networks contribute to visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies

Giovanni Zorzi et al.

Summary: The study found that patients with visual hallucinations in dementia with Lewy bodies showed alterations in the microstructural and functional connectivity of the ventral fiber tracts in the right hemisphere, which were associated with the severity of visual hallucinations and performance in visual attention tasks.

Neuroanatomical and cognitive correlates of visual hallucinations in Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies: Voxel-based morphometry and neuropsychological meta-analysis

Stefania Pezzoli et al.

Summary: The study found that visual hallucinations in patients with Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies are associated with reductions in grey matter volume in certain brain regions, as well as lower verbal immediate memory performance in Parkinson's disease patients.

In vivo nucleus basalis of Meynert degeneration in mild cognitive impairment with Lewy bodies

Julia Schumacher et al.

Summary: The study found that cholinergic degeneration in the MCI-LB stage is related to cognitive impairment severity. Early EEG slowing in MCI-LB might be partly cholinergically driven. These findings suggest an early cholinergic deficit in MCI-LB.
