There is no agreement on the benefits of prophylactic thoracic duct ligation (TDL), with or without resection, during esophagectomy for cancer patients. The effects of these procedures on postoperative complications and overall survival remain unclear. This systematic review of 16 articles found that TDL did not affect short- and long-term outcomes. However, thoracic duct resection increased postoperative chylothorax and overall complications, without improving survival.
