From Bypass Transition to Flow Control and Data-Driven Turbulence Modeling: An Input-Output Viewpoint

Mihailo R. Jovanovic

Summary: Transient growth and resolvent analyses are used to assess nonasymptotic properties of fluid flows, with resolvent analysis enhancing insights by detailed examination of input-output responses. The differentiating feature plays a key role in quantifying the importance of mechanisms for bypass transition in wall-bounded shear flows and in explaining how turbulent jets generate noise. The utility of a stochastic framework in addressing various challenges including transition in complex fluids, flow control, and turbulence modeling is highlighted.

Quantifying Non-Stationarity with Information Theory

Carlos Granero-Belinchon et al.

Summary: The index introduced is based on information theory to quantify the stationarity of a stochastic process by comparing information at different time scales. It provides a multi-scale quantity to explore complete dependences in the process, measures the regularity of the process, and indicates the non-stationary characteristics across scales.

Cause-and-effect of linear mechanisms sustaining wall turbulence

Adrian Lozano-Duran et al.

Summary: Despite the nonlinear nature of turbulence, evidence shows that part of the energy transfer mechanisms sustaining wall turbulence can be attributed to linear processes. Different scenarios based on linear stability theory, including exponential instabilities, neutral modes, transient growth from non-normal operators and parametric instabilities, are rooted in simplified physical models. Among these, transient growth has been shown to be sufficient for sustaining realistic wall turbulence, while suppressing other linear mechanisms such as exponential instabilities, neutral modes, and parametric instabilities.

Scaling of the maximum-entropy turbulence energy spectra

T. -W. Lee

Summary: The log-normal type turbulence energy spectral function, derived from the maximum entropy principle, can be parameterized in terms of root turbulence variables including the Reynolds number. Comparison with experimental data sets shows close agreement across entire energy and length scales; the peak wavenumber and width parameter prescribe spectral location and broadening with increasing Reynolds number. Energy scale is adjusted with a multiplicative factor. Energy spectra at various locations in channel flows can be reproduced using the same function, indicating applicability wherever local equilibrium is achieved.

Information transfer between turbulent boundary layers and porous media

Summary: The permeability of the porous medium has a significant impact on the intensity, time scale, and spatial extent of surface-subsurface interactions. This interaction can be further decomposed into two coupling directions, namely, top-down and bottom-up.
