Volume-preserving diffeomorphism as nonabelian higher-rank gauge symmetry

Yi-Hsien Du et al.

Summary: We propose nonabelian higher-rank gauge theories in 2+1D and 3+1D, constructed from the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of space. The physics of the lowest Landau level (LLL) limit is interpreted as the consequences of the symmetry. The Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) algebra and the topological Wen-Zee term are derived within our formalism. The LLL effective action of vortex crystal in rotating Bose gas and Wigner crystal of electron in an applied magnetic field are derived using the gauge symmetry in 2+1D. The fractonic behavior of the excitations on the lowest Landau level and of skyrmions in ferromagnets are interpreted as the consequences of the higher-rank gauge symmetry.

Field theories for type-II fractons

Weslei B. Fontana et al.

Summary: The paper presents an effective field theory for a type-II fracton starting from the Haah code on the lattice. It also discusses a Chern-Simons-like theory from the opposite perspective, i.e., starting from the continuum, which does not require a constraint or projector and has no mobile excitations.

Topological orders, braiding statistics, and mixture of two types of twisted BF theories in five dimensions

Zhi-Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: The paper presents a topological quantum field theoretical study on topological orders in five-dimensional spacetime, introducing higher-form gauge fields and constructing exotic TQFT actions. The characterization and classification of 5D topological orders encode information of 4D gravitational anomaly, and further research on putting TQFTs on 5D manifolds with boundaries is suggested.

Anomaly cascade in (2+1)-dimensional fermionic topological phases

Daniel Bulmash et al.

Summary: We develop a theory of anomalies of fermionic topological phases of matter and explore various obstructions related to fermionic symmetry groups. The study reveals that if any of these obstructions is nontrivial, the subsequent ones become relative anomalies. Additionally, the article presents conjectures regarding symmetry actions on super-modular categories.

Fermionic symmetry fractionalization in (2+1) dimensions

Daniel Bulmash et al.

Summary: We develop a systematic theory of symmetry fractionalization for fermionic topological phases of matter in (2 + 1)D. By analyzing the algebraic data that characterizes the anyon content in the supermodular tensor category, we identify the obstructions of bosonic and fermionic symmetry localization. When these obstructions vanish, distinct symmetry fractionalization patterns form a torsor over H-2(G(b), A/{1, psi}).

Fractons and Exotic Symmetries from Branes

Hao Geng et al.

Summary: The study of fractons has led to the construction of various novel continuum quantum field theories, including foliated field theories, exotic field theories, and infinite-component Chern-Simons theories. By embedding these theories into D-branes for analysis, valuable insights into the physics of these interesting field theories can be obtained.

A modified Villain formulation of fractons and other exotic theories

Pranay Gorantla et al.

Summary: This paper reformulates known exotic theories on a Euclidean spacetime lattice, modifying them to a convenient range of parameters using the Villain approach. The new lattice models are closer to the continuum limit and exhibit properties of continuum theories, showcasing emergent global symmetries and surprising dualities. The paper clarifies the relation between condensed-matter and high-energy views of these systems, emphasizing the role of symmetries associated with the topology of field space, duality, and various anomalies.

Comments on foliated gauge theories and dualities in 3+1d

Po-Shen Hsin et al.

Summary: We investigated the properties of foliated gauge fields and constructed several foliated field theories to describe foliated fracton orders in 3+1 dimensions. These theories involve Abelian or non-Abelian gauge theories coupled to foliated gauge fields, and can be classified into electric models and magnetic models. We demonstrated a duality between these two classes of foliated field theories, and also constructed a model for a subsystem-symmetry protected topological phase using foliated gauge fields.

Renormalization group analysis on emergence of higher rank symmetry and higher moment conservation

Hongchao Li et al.

Summary: This paper explores how higher rank symmetry and higher moment conservation emerge at low energies through one-loop renormalization group analysis. By studying the vicinity of symmetric points, it is found that symmetry-disallowed kinetic terms tend to be irrelevant within the perturbative regime, potentially leading to emergent higher rank symmetry and higher moment conservation at the deep infrared limit. This analysis presents alternative promise for realizing higher rank symmetry and higher moment conservation in experimentally achievable systems.

Fracton physics of spatially extended excitations. II. Polynomial ground state degeneracy of exactly solvable models

Meng-Yuan Li et al.

Summary: This paper computes ground state degeneracy in isotropic and anisotropic lattices by constructing solvable models and applying the mathematical game coloring method for decomposing and reconstructing ground states. The obtained GSD formulas show diverse polynomial dependence on system sizes, suggesting possible encoding of geometrical and topological fingerprints of higher-dimensional manifolds beyond toric manifolds. Further investigation is needed to explore this potential implication.

Multipolar topological field theories: Bridging higher order topological insulators and fractons

Yizhi You et al.

Summary: This study constructs topological multipolar response theories capturing the essential features of some classes of fractons with subsystem symmetries and higher order topological insulators. It finds that despite their distinct symmetry structures, some classes of fractons and HOTIs can be connected through essentially identical topological response theories. The study proposes a topological quadrupole response theory for 2D symmetry-protected fracton phases and related bosonic quadrupolar HOTIs, as well as a dipolar Chern-Simons theory for second-order HOTIs and related fracton phases in 3D, extending to higher dimensions with multipolar Chern-Simons terms and related theta-term actions.

Dual gauge theory formulation of planar quasicrystal elasticity and fractons

Piotr Surowka

Summary: The elastic properties of planar quasicrystals are described using a gauge theory with symmetric and asymmetric gauge fields corresponding to phonon and phason degrees of freedom. Topological defects in quasicrystals are succinctly incorporated in the dual description, interpreted as fractonic excitations. The static interaction potential between defects in a quasicrystal with fivefold symmetry is calculated with a small coupling between phonon and phason stresses.

Compatible braidings with Hopf links, multiloop, and Borromean rings in (3+1)-dimensional spacetime

Zhi-Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper provides a field-theoretical approach to list mutually compatible braiding phases of topological orders in three-dimensional spacetime. By studying root braiding processes, illegitimate combinations were identified where certain braiding phases could not coexist, leading to illegitimate topological orders. The use of three-dimensional topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) helped in determining legitimate combinations and obtaining all sets of mutually compatible braiding phases and legitimate topological orders.

Summary: This paper explores an exotic fractonic superfluid phase in d-dimensional space where subdimensional particles are condensed, investigating their properties including off-diagonal long range order (ODLRO). By introducing a higher-rank symmetry in the Hamiltonian model, the stability against quantum fluctuations is demonstrated, along with the study of vortex configurations and their impact on the phase. Overall, the paper provides a detailed analysis of fractonic superfluids and their behaviors in different dimensions.

Higher-rank tensor non-Abelian field theory: Higher-moment or subdimensional polynomial global symmetry, algebraic variety, Noether's theorem, and gauging

Juven Wang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a higher-moment polynomial global symmetry in condensed matter physics, relates it to lower degree subdimensional or subsystem global symmetry on layers of submanifolds, and generalizes Noether's theorem. By promoting the higher-moment global symmetry to a local symmetry, a new family of higher-rank symmetric tensor gauge theory can be derived, along with a general class of rank-m tensor non-Abelian gauge field theory.
