Non-Majorana states yield nearly quantized conductance in proximatized nanowires

P. Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of nearly quantized peaks close to the expected value by tunnel probes on both ends of a nanowire. However, the nearly quantized zero-bias peaks were only found localized to one end of the nanowire, raising doubts on whether they are Majoranas.

Charge-Impurity Effects in Hybrid Majorana Nanowires

Benjamin D. Woods et al.

Summary: This study addresses the quantitative characterization of disorder effects in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures for the development of Majorana-based topological qubits. By developing a microscopic theory, the research provides insights into the impact of charge impurities on the physics of the hybrid structure and offers a clear direction for experimental progress, including specific material quality and semiconductor purity targets that must be achieved.

Nontopological zero-bias peaks in full-shell nanowires induced by flux-tunable Andreev states

Marco Valentini et al.

Summary: The presence of subgap states in a semiconducting nanowire fully wrapped by a superconducting shell is influenced by the junction region in tunneling spectroscopy measurements, rather than the nanowire itself. Quantum dots formed in the junction region may host Andreev levels in the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov regime, leading to intricate magnetic field dependence of the Andreev levels. This could result in zero-bias peaks that are easily misinterpreted as originating from Majorana zero modes, but are actually unrelated to topological superconductivity.

Electrostatic effects and topological superconductivity in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic-insulator hybrid wires

Benjamin D. Woods et al.

Summary: By performing self-consistent Schrodinger-Poisson calculations, it was found that electrostatic effects can impact the emergence of topological superconductivity in semiconductor-superconductor-magnetic-insulator hybrid structures. This is mainly achieved by controlling the amplitude of low-energy wave functions near the semiconductor-magnetic-insulator interface.

Distinguishing trivial and topological zero-energy states in long nanowire junctions

Jorge Cayao et al.

Summary: This study explores the emergence of robust but trivial zero-energy states in non-topological superconductors, proposing a simple protocol for distinguishing between trivial and topological zero-energy states. The response of equilibrium supercurrents and critical currents to variations in superconductor region length is found to be different when trivial zero-energy states are present, compared to when topological Majorana bound states are present.

Disorder-induced zero-bias peaks in Majorana nanowires

Sankar Das Sarma et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the general issue of confirmation bias in experiments verifying various theoretical topological quantization predictions, using the recently retracted work by Zhang et al. and the related data from the Delft experiment as examples. It also analyzes a more recent nanowire experiment, showing that disorder may lead to misinterpretation of trivial zero-bias peaks as topological Majorana modes.
