Sue Monk Kidd is a notable writer in African American literature who addresses spiritual memoir and discrimination in American society. The paper focuses on the sufferings and double oppression faced by black women, as well as the verbal and mental abuse inflicted upon them by white society. It also highlights the significance of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in granting equal rights to black people and explores how the protagonist overcomes her struggles and registers to vote.
Sue Monk Kidd is a notable writer in African American literature. Most of her works deals about the spiritual memoir and discriminations in American society which chronicles her path to feminist enlightenment. One of the most celebrated works of her is The Secret Life of Bees which presents the life of black people especially the black women's sufferings, discrimination and double oppression. Even the white women's suppressions in the hands of white men are also presented in the novel. This paper throws light on how the black people came out from sufferings and received equal rights because of the Civil Right Act passed by the government in July 2, 1964. Also it shows how the white people abused the black verbally and mentally by calling them as Nigger, Black and Negro in American society. The Civil Rights Act passed by the American President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 on banning the discrimination on the basis of race, creed, and sex. The black people become very strong in fighting for their equal rights still in the present generation. The paper analysis how the protagonist Rosaleen, a black woman overcomes all her sufferings and register her vote.
