A mathematically-based study of the random wheel-rail contact irregularity by wheel out-of-roundness

Lin Jing et al.

Summary: This study proposes an innovative computational method to address several issues in wheel-rail finite element analysis, including challenges in geometry modelling, potential computation termination, and the trade-off between computational efficiency and accuracy. The method transforms the geometric irregularities induced by wheel out-of-roundness into randomly irregular displacement excitation of the wheel-rail contact, improving the applicability of the model.

Crushing characteristics of bionic thin-walled tubes inspired by bamboo and beetle forewing

Linwei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a group of bionic thin-walled tubes inspired by the microstructure of bamboo and beetle forewing. Experimental testing and finite element modeling are conducted to validate their performance. The crushing performance of bionic thin-walled tubes and traditional thin-walled tubes is compared, and the optimal design is determined.

Experimental and numerical study of square sandwich panels with layered-gradient foam cores to air-blast loading

Lin Jing et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical studies on the blast response of clamped sandwich panels with layered-gradient aluminium foam cores showed that all layered-gradient core sandwich panels have weaker blast resistance capability compared to ungraded sandwich panels due to reduced structural integrity. For a given effective impulse, the specific energy absorption value of positive gradient sandwich panels is the largest, followed by ungraded sandwich panels, with negative gradient sandwich panels being the lowest.

Impact vibration behavior of railway vehicles: a state-of-the-art overview

Lin Jing et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive overview of recent studies on the impact vibration behavior of railway vehicles, categorizing sources of impact excitations, introducing research approaches of vehicle impact vibration, and examining impact vibration response characteristics. The results show that excessive vibrations of railway vehicles induced by dynamic impact loadings have a significant impact on train operating safety and stability, which are difficult to eliminate due to the complexity and diversity of railway lines and service environment.
