Enhancing binaural rendering of head-worn microphone arrays through the use of adaptive spatial covariance matching

Janani Fernandez et al.

Summary: This article investigates the application of spatial covariance matching for producing spatially enhanced binaural signals using head-worn microphone arrays. A two-step processing paradigm is followed, where an initial estimate of the binaural signals is first produced using one of three suggested binaural rendering approaches. The proposed spatial covariance matching enhancement is then applied to refine these estimated binaural signals, resulting in signals that closely resemble the spatial characteristics of simulated reference signals. The enhancement is shown to be general in nature and can be applied to other similar binaural rendering algorithms.

Multichannel 3D Microphone Arrays: A Review

Hyunkook Lee

Summary: This paper categorizes different 3D microphone arrays based on design principles, provides an overview of each array, and reviews studies evaluating microphone arrays. The discussion on different approaches in the configuration of upper microphone layer aims to offer insights into creating an immersive auditory experience. Limitations of previous studies and future research topics in 3D sound recording are also identified.

A Head-Mounted Microphone Array for Binaural Rendering

Jens Ahrens et al.

Summary: This study introduces a method for obtaining a spherical harmonic representation of a sound field using a microphone array along the equator of a rigid spherical object. An extension of this method allows for employing a scattering object such as a human head. The paper provides an overview and comparison of the two solutions, with an instrumental evaluation based on binaural rendering of captured sound fields.
