Swidden agriculture in transition and its roles in tropical forest loss and industrial plantation expansion

Peng Li et al.

Summary: Tropical forests are decreasing and industrial tree plantations are expanding, but little is known about the interactions and effects among tropical forests, swidden agriculture, and plantations. Initiatives like the UN-REDD Programme emphasize forest conservation and climate change, highlighting the importance of swidden agriculture in biodiversity and climate issues.

Contribution Isolation of LUCC Impact on Regional PM2.5 Air Pollution: Implications for Sustainable Land and Environment Management

Ying Ding et al.

Summary: Understanding the contribution of land use and land cover change to air pollution is crucial for land management and air pollution control. This study estimated the contribution of land use and land cover change (LUCC) to PM2.5 pollution levels in the CZT urban agglomeration in China. The results showed that LUCC had a significant impact on air pollution, with different magnitudes under different climate conditions. The findings also highlighted the importance of sustainable development policies in mitigating air pollution.

Characteristics and progress of land use/cover change research during 1990-2018

Chunyang He et al.

Summary: This paper aims to systematically review land use/cover change (LUCC) research from 1990 to 2018. The study found that the number of publications and citations on LUCC research grew exponentially, with a change in research focus over time. Current LUCC research is facing theoretical, methodological, and practical challenges. To move forward, the integration of LUCC research with landscape sustainability science and geodesign is recommended.

Assessment of the impact of LUCC on NPP and its influencing factors in the Yangtze River basin, China

Hongfei Yang et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of land use and land cover changes on vegetation net primary productivity in the Yangtze River basin from 2001 to 2018, showing that land changes led to an increase in NPP. Forest area increased the most while grassland area decreased the most.

Spatiotemporal Patterns and Drivers of Land Use and Land Cover Change in the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor

Suocheng Dong et al.

Summary: The ecological environment in the China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor (CMREC) has deteriorated, with forests being the largest source of unused land and urban areas consistently expanding. China has the highest urbanization rate and experienced a prominent increase in forest revegetation. Railways are identified as the most important factor in driving land use and land cover change (LUCC) in the region.

Dongyang Xiao et al.

Summary: This study focused on Henan Province in China, analyzing the temporal and spatial patterns of carbon storage caused by land use changes in four river basins from 1990 to 2018. The results highlighted the common characteristic of land use changes in the four basins, and suggested further strengthening the carbon sequestration capacity in the Yellow River Basin and Yangtze River Basin.

Integrating Pixels, People, and Political Economy to Understand the Role of Armed Conflict and Geopolitics in Driving Deforestation: The Case of Myanmar

Kevin M. Woods et al.

Summary: The study found that factors influencing deforestation include armed conflict, geopolitics, national political economic reforms and timber regulations, and proximity to national borders and their respective geopolitical relations. There are three common periods of deforestation spikes in northern and southern Myanmar, but significant differences exist between regions as well as within townships and village tracts.

An evaluation of the effectiveness of protected areas in Thailand

Minerva Singh et al.

Summary: Thailand boasts rich biodiversity and numerous protected areas, but there are shortcomings in the protection of national ecosystems and a need for more focus on vulnerable environments and hotspot populations. The study calls for strengthening protection of high-risk areas, optimizing the existing protected area network, increasing coverage, and addressing challenges and trade-offs in the face of population growth and agricultural intensification.

Changing Land Use and Population Density Are Degrading Water Quality in the Lower Mekong Basin

Flavia Tromboni et al.

Summary: This study examined the impacts of land use on water quality constituents in the Lower Mekong Basin, finding that agriculture, urbanization, and population density were linked to decreasing water quality health. Thailand and Laos had higher nitrogen and ammonium concentrations compared to reference conditions, while Cambodia exhibited higher phosphorus values, indicating water quality degradation.

Land Use and Land Cover Change in the Yellow River Basin from 1980 to 2015 and Its Impact on the Ecosystem Services

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that human-induced land cover changes have a significant impact on ecosystem service values; from 1980 to 2015, the cumulative area of human-induced land cover change in the Yellow River Basin reached 65.71 million ha, almost equal to the total area; the implementation of the Grain for Green program has significantly improved the natural vegetation in the upstream and midstream areas of the Yellow River Basin.

Impact of the Kunming-Bangkok Highway on Land Use Changes along the Route between Laos and Thailand

Fangyu Zheng et al.

Summary: The study found that the further away from the highway, the smaller the overall changes in land use within the buffer zone. A comparison before and after the road was opened in 2013 showed significant changes in influential land use types, with forests being converted to plantations and agriculture. This research can provide a scientific basis for regional transportation planning and sustainable land resource management.
