Advancing reliability assessments of photovoltaic modules and materials using combined-accelerated stress testing

Michael Owen-Bellini et al.

Summary: A newly introduced combined-accelerated stress test (C-AST) method, which combines multiple stress factors of the natural environment simultaneously, shows improved ability to detect failure modes, which were previously unknown. Research demonstrates that under simulated harsh environmental conditions, various failure modes such as backsheet cracking, solder/interconnect fatigue, and light-induced degradation modes can occur.

Towards validation of combined-accelerated stress testing through failure analysis of polyamide-based photovoltaic backsheets

Michael Owen-Bellini et al.

Summary: Novel methods have been developed for advancing reliability testing of photovoltaic modules and materials, with C-AST being one method that has reliably reproduced some field-failures. By validating the failure mechanisms induced in C-AST using appropriate materials characterization and modeling, confidence in the test protocol can be increased. This approach was demonstrated by applying it to a cracking failure of a specific polyamide-based backsheet material, showing that the conditions applied in C-AST are representative of field conditions.

Performance of PV modules using co-extruded backsheets based on polypropylene

G. Oreski et al.

Summary: The study discusses the influence of PP-based backsheets on the performance and reliability of PV modules, with PP backsheets showing higher reflectance compared to PET backsheets and leading to increased power output. Test modules using PP backsheets exhibit higher corrosion resistance and no severe material degradation after extended exposure to temperature, humidity, and irradiation. PP backsheets have the potential to be a valid replacement for standard PET backsheets in PV modules, providing improved functional properties and long-term stability.

Optimizing Combined Accelerated Stress Testing for Solar Backsheet Qualification

Paul Gebhardt et al.

Summary: The combination of multiple accelerated stress conditions is critical in understanding and predicting the performance of PV module materials and designs over a long expected lifetime. This paper introduces an accelerated test approach that combines elements of two different methods to best match the outdoor environment. The duration of exposure and correlation to field performance are key considerations in the development of the test protocol.

Low temperature induced physical aging effects of backsheet materials

Gernot Oreski et al.

Summary: This study found that after 17 years of storage, the strain at break values of backsheet materials significantly decreased, possibly due to a disentanglement of the polymer chains in the amorphous phase. Particularly for PVDF, this change in mechanical behavior is considered critical and could result in cracking during operation.
