Enhancing pyrolysis gas and bio-oil formation through transition metals as in situ catalysts

Andrew H. Hubble et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of in situ transition metal catalysts during cellulose pyrolysis, which enhances hydrogen gas production and improves bio-oil yields while decreasing the average molecular weight of oil compounds. Nickel was found to be the most effective in generating hydrogen gas and producing a wider array of light-weight bio-oil compounds. Copper aided dehydrogenation at lower temperatures and initiated primary pyrolysis by generating specific compounds. Through understanding how catalysts enhance bio-oils, high-density and cleaner-burning liquid fuels can be developed to displace fossil fuels.

Estimating aboveground net primary productivity of reforested trees in an urban landscape using biophysical variables and remotely sensed data

Mthembeni Mngadi et al.

Summary: This study estimated the aboveground NPP of an urban reforested landscape using biophysical and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Imager data, showing significant variation in NPP among different reforested trees. The multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of specific biophysical variables in improving the estimation of NPP at a fine-scale resolution.

Aesthetic heterogeneity on rural landscape: Pathway discrepancy between perception and cognition

Jun Qi et al.

Summary: This research investigates the mechanism of aesthetic heterogeneity in rural landscape by exploring the pathway discrepancy between perception and cognition. The study reveals that pathway discrepancy is an essential part of the aesthetic heterogeneity. In terms of rural landscape governance, the authors suggest considering participants' place attachment, epistemology standpoint, and demographic features to establish aesthetic justice. Additionally, they recommend shifting the focus of rural landscape improvement from physical features to livelihood and lifestyle, and involving different stakeholders in landscape management to reconcile aesthetic conflicts.

The carbon sequestration potential of urban public parks of densely populated cities to improve environmental sustainability

Saleh Shadman et al.

Summary: Due to the rapid increase in population and urbanisation, the shortage of green spaces and urban parks in densely populated cities has become a pressing issue worldwide. This study focuses on the carbon sequestration potential of vegetation and turf in urban parks, using the case of Shaheed Zayan Chowdhury Playground in Banani, Dhaka. The findings highlight the significance of urban parks in carbon capture and storage.

Anaerobic co-digestion of a lignocellulosic residue with different organic wastes: Relationship between biomethane yield, soluble organic matter and process stability

Mirko Cucina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate anaerobic co-digestion of lignocellulosic residues and the role of soluble organic matter, showing that co-digestion can increase biomethane yields with a positive correlation to soluble organic matter. Fruit wastes and brewery trub positively affected anaerobic digestion of lignocellulosic residues, but fruit waste co-digestion may lead to early acidification.

Modeling biomass allocation strategy of young planted Zelkova serrata trees in Taiwan with component ratio method and seemingly unrelated regressions

Chieh-Yin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the biomass allocation strategy of Zelkova serrata, finding that dominant trees tend to branch while smaller trees invest in larger main stems. Early pruning treatments should focus on dominant trees to maintain crown ratio and ensure wood quality.

Analysis of the Possibility of Energetic Utilization of Biomass Obtained from Grass Mowing of a Large-Area Golf Course-A Case Study of Tuscany

Lukasz Sobol et al.

Summary: The mowing of sports fields generates a significant amount of waste biomass which requires appropriate management. Currently, the main directions for grass clippings management include composting, grass cycling, and waste. Utilizing grass clippings for energy not only solves the problem of organic waste management, but also brings measurable economic profits.

Ilaria D'Elia et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the capability of the Italian national chemical transport model, AMS-MINNI, in capturing air pollutant concentration trends in Italy from 2003 to 2010. The model shows good agreement with observed trends, offering greater spatial coverage and statistical significance. Additionally, the study highlights the complex links between emissions and air pollutant concentrations, emphasizing the importance of understanding these relationships for future policy planning.

The relevance of sustainable soil management within the European Green Deal

Luca Montanarella et al.

Summary: The European Green Deal aims to make the European Union the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, with ambitious measures including protecting soils, reducing chemical pesticide and fertilizer use, increasing organic farming, restoring polluted areas, and planting billions of new trees. These actions are part of the Biodiversity Strategy 2030, the Farm to Fork strategy, and the European Climate Law to achieve the ambitious targets set by the Green Deal.
