Anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste: Methane production performance and mechanism analysis

Yuqi Wu et al.

Summary: The study on anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste showed that adding 1.5% and 3% of fish waste could enhance methane production, while adding more than 6% inhibited methane production severely. Microbial community analysis revealed dominance of hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic methanogenesis pathways during anaerobic co-digestion.

Characterizing the growing microorganisms at species level in 46 anaerobic digesters at Danish wastewater treatment plants: A six-year survey on microbial community structure and key drivers

Chenjing Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial ecology of anaerobic digestion (AD) in 46 digesters at 22 wastewater treatment plants in Denmark. High-resolution bacterial and archaeal community analyses revealed the characteristics and drivers of community composition in AD systems. The comprehensive insight into community structure at species level provides a foundation for future studies on the ecological significance, characteristics, and function of novel or poorly described taxa.

Syntrophic butyrate-oxidizing methanogenesis promoted by anthraquinone-2-sulfonate and cysteine: Distinct tendencies towards the enrichment of methanogens and syntrophic fatty-acid oxidizing bacteria

Guanjing Cai et al.

Summary: Interspecies electron transfer (IET) plays a crucial role in the performance of anaerobic digestion by syntrophic fatty-acid oxidizing bacteria (SFOBs) and methanogens. The addition of anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) and cysteine showed concentration-dependent effects on glucose and butyrate digestion, with cysteine acting as a reductant and AQS as an electron shuttle to accelerate methanogenic butyrate degradation. This study demonstrated that a wide spectrum of SFOBs and methanogens benefited from the addition of electron shuttles, laying the foundation for future application.

Enhanced biomethane production from corn straw by a novel anaerobic digestion strategy with mechanochemical pretreatment

Shuaishuai Ma et al.

Summary: The application of acidogenesis liquid digestate (ALD) and disc refining (DR) technology on corn straw can enhance biomethane production by forming a thorough and stable integrated two-phase anaerobic system. Adjusting the concentration of volatile fatty acids in the acidogenic phase with this pretreatment technology can improve the efficiency of methanogenic bacteria in the methanogenic phase, resulting in a 47.13% increase in biomethane yield.

Accelerating anaerobic digestion for methane production: Potential role of direct interspecies electron transfer

Zixin Wang et al.

Summary: Anaerobic digestion is a commercial technology used for producing bioenergy from waste, but suffers from inefficiencies. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) is seen as a potential solution to enhance the process, as it allows for faster and more stable transport of reducing equivalents between bacteria and archaea. This review paper discusses different mechanisms of DIET, its role during organic degradation, startup performance, methane production, and potential industrial applications.

Enhancing methanogenic fermentation of waste activated sludge via isoelectric-point pretreatment: Insights from interfacial thermodynamics, electron transfer and microbial community

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the efficiency of methane generation from waste activated sludge (WAS) can be significantly enhanced through pretreatment with isoelectric-point (pI), which improves the hydrophobic attractions at the solid-liquid interface and promotes electron transfer efficiency. The pI pretreatment also led to an increase in the relative abundances of main functional microbes related to hydrolysis, acidification, and methanation, contributing to an overall boost in methane production.
