A detailed biostratigraphic framework for 0-1.2 Ma Quaternary sediments of north-eastern Zealandia

Martin P. Crundwell et al.

Summary: A detailed biostratigraphic framework has been developed in this study to help unravel the complex stratigraphy of tectonically deformed Quaternary sediments on the Hikurangi margin of north-eastern Zealandia. The framework is based on well-documented and dated planktic foraminiferal records from Ocean Drilling Project Site 181-1123.

Late Neogene evolution of modern deep-dwelling plankton

Flavia Boscolo-Galazzo et al.

Summary: The fossil record of marine microplankton provides insights into the evolutionary drivers behind the origin of modern deep-water plankton. Research over the past 15 million years shows that global cooling and increased efficiency of the biological pump have favored the evolution of deep-water organisms.

Surface hydrographic changes at the western flank of the Sicily Channel associated with the last sapropel

Sergio Trias-Navarro et al.

Summary: In the eastern Mediterranean Sea, major climactic and oceanographic changes during the early Holocene led to the formation of the last sapropel (S1), with significant surface water property changes and restricted water exchange likely triggered by African monsoon. A decrease in summer stratification around 7 kyr cal. BP marked the end of extreme conditions during S1, possibly reflecting the influence of the eastward path of surface Atlantic waters and a reinforcement of water exchange through the Strait of Sicily.

Planktic foraminiferal changes in the western Mediterranean Anthropocene

Summary: The study suggests that natural planktic foraminiferal population dynamics in the western Mediterranean is already altered by enhanced anthropogenic impact in the industrial era, with natural cycles being overprinted by human influences.
