Partitioning maternal and exogenous diet contributions to otolith 87Sr/86Sr in kokanee salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka)

Jill M. Janak et al.

Summary: Strontium isotopes in otoliths of Pacific salmon are used to determine natal origin, but maternal contribution from egg yolk can affect the isotopic signature. Experimental research on kokanee salmon showed significant differences in Sr-87/Sr-86 contributions between populations, suggesting that differences in Sr-87/Sr-86, Sr and Ca concentrations, and population-specific effects on otolith growth contribute to variation. Understanding these factors could expand the use of otolith geochemistry for determining provenance in species with limited natal site rearing.
