Five-Fold Symmetric Pentaindolo- and Pentakis(benzoindolo)Corannulenes: Unique Structural Dynamics Derived from the Combination of Helical and Bowl Inversions

Koki Kise et al.

Summary: Peripherally pi-extended corannulenes with quintuple azahelicene units were prepared and their dynamic behaviors were studied. Analysis revealed that the structural isomers can interchange in solution, depending on steric congestion, and the co-existing moieties influence the conformational dynamics, reducing activation energy barriers for isomerization.

Robust Cobalt Catalyst for Nitrile/Alkyne [2+2+2] Cycloaddition: Synthesis of Polyarylpyridines and Their Mechanochemical Cyclodehydrogenation to Nitrogen-Containing Polyaromatics**

Chang-Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: The study presents a simple and inexpensive catalytic system based on cobalt(II) iodide, 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, and Zn for the [2+2+2] cycloaddition of various nitriles and diarylacetylenes to synthesize a broad range of polyarylated pyridines. DFT studies support a reaction pathway involving oxidative coupling of two alkynes, insertion of the nitrile into a cobaltacyclopentadiene, and C-N reductive elimination, leading to the synthesis of tetra- and pentaarylpyridines that can be used as precursors for nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Summary: This article presents a new nitrogen-doped analogue of s-indacene, 1,5-diaza-s-indacene, which exhibits distinct antiaromaticity and higher electron-accepting ability compared to the parent compound. The effective conjugation of the 1,5-diaza-s-indacene core with peripheral aryl groups allows for fine-tuning of absorption spectra and redox properties. The energetic aspects of the two possible localized forms of 1,5-diaza-s-indacene were compared in this study.
