Plant Recombinant Human Collagen Type I Hydrogels for Corneal Regeneration

Michel Haagdorens et al.

Summary: The study assessed the feasibility of using plant-derived recombinant human collagen type I (RHCI) for corneal regenerative implants. Results showed that plant-derived RHCI hydrogels promoted regeneration of corneal tissue in minipigs, demonstrating mechanical stability and biocompatibility. The potential unlimited supply of RHCI makes it a safe alternative for tissue engineering applications.

Study of the immunologic response of marine-derived collagen and gelatin extracts for tissue engineering applications

A. L. Alves et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the immune response to collagen and gelatin extracted from blue shark and codfish. The results demonstrated that these materials can induce a macrophage phenotype related to anti-inflammatory resolution and act as immuno-modulators and anti-inflammatory inducible materials.

Marine Collagen: A Promising Biomaterial for Wound Healing, Skin Anti-Aging, and Bone Regeneration

Sarah Geahchan et al.

Summary: Marine organisms contain bioactive substances like collagen that have various applications in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Marine collagen, being water soluble, metabolically compatible, and easily accessible, can serve as a biomaterial. It has been found effective in healing skin injuries and combating the aging process. Marine collagen has also shown potential in preventing and treating osteoporosis and osteoarthritis by promoting bone density and cell growth.

Collagen Membrane for Guided Bone Regeneration in Dental and Orthopedic Applications

Brent Allan et al.

Summary: Treatment of cortical bone defects is a clinical challenge. In this study, a new type I collagen membrane for guided bone regeneration (GBR) has been clinically translated. The collagen membrane acts in an osteoconductive manner to facilitate cortical bone regeneration and improve cortical bone repair significantly, both in preclinical animal study and clinical trial. CelGro collagen membrane shows promise for GBR in both dental and orthopedic applications.

The Potential Use of Novel Plant-Derived Recombinant Human Collagen in Aesthetic Medicine

Jasmine Seror et al.

Summary: Recombinant human type I collagen, which is structurally and functionally identical to human type I collagen, has been successfully expressed and extracted from genetically modified tobacco plants. Unlike tissue-extracted protein, rhCollagen is non-immunogenic and non-allergenic, with an intact triple helix structure displaying superior biological functionality. A photocurable rhCollagen has been developed through chemical modification, allowing cross-linking under illumination at various wavelengths while maintaining its structural and biological functions. The potential applications of this photocurable rhCollagen in aesthetic medicine, particularly as a dermal filler and a bioink for 3D-printed breast implants, are discussed.

Periodontal Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration: A Narrative Review

Young-Dan Cho et al.

Summary: Periodontal disease is a significant public health issue, with most periodontal surgeries being invasive procedures involving resection of gingiva or alveolar bone. The periodontal wound healing process is similar to fetal healing, almost scar-free. Successful periodontal tissue regeneration requires addressing detrimental factors and adopting future strategies.

Collagen in Wound Healing

Shomita S. Mathew-Steiner et al.

Summary: Normal wound healing progresses through inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling phases, with collagen playing a key role in regulating these phases. Impairments in wound healing can lead to chronic non-healing wounds, where collagen has been utilized as an adjunct therapy to promote healing.
