In Silico Finite Element Modeling of Stress Distribution in Osteosynthesis after Pertrochanteric Fractures

Jacek Lorkowski et al.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of using finite element modeling to predict stress distribution in two commonly used stabilization methods for pertrochanteric femur fractures. The results showed that gamma nail fixation and dynamic hip screw produced similar stress levels, but gamma nail fixation had shorter surgery time and faster patient recovery, suggesting it may be the optimal system.

Current Knowledge on Biomaterials for Orthopedic Applications Modified to Reduce Bacterial Adhesive Ability

Valeria Allizond et al.

Summary: A significant challenge in orthopedics is the design of biomaterial devices that can substitute or repair tissues and control bone repair. This review provides an overview of recent research into biomaterial modifications to reduce bacterial adhesive ability, focusing on metallic materials, polymers, and composites. Close interdisciplinary collaboration is needed to modify biomaterial structures and improve their antibacterial properties and resistance to infection.

Tresca stress evaluation of Metal-on-UHMWPE total hip arthroplasty during peak loading from normal walking activity

Muhammad Imam Ammarullah et al.

Summary: Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a commonly used biomaterial in medical devices, particularly implants. The combination of UHMWPE with metal in total hip arthroplasty has widespread use but long-term adverse effects are a concern. The study evaluated the performance of three metal materials under stress conditions and found that the combination of cobalt chromium molybdenum (CoCrMo) with UHMWPE showed the best results.

Gait Performance of Friction-Based Prosthetic Knee Joint Swing-Phase Controllers in Under-Resourced Settings

Jan Andrysek et al.

Summary: Gait quality is crucial for prosthetic rehabilitation, but data on component selection in under-resourced settings is limited. This study compared two common friction-based swing-phase controlled prosthetic knee joints and found that the friction-based mechanism improved gait quality and resulted in faster walking speeds. Therefore, friction-based knee control mechanisms can provide suitable and cost-effective solutions in under-resourced settings.

Does Pelvic Orientation Influence Wear Measurement of the Acetabular Cup in Total Hip Arthroplasty-An Experimental Study

Junzhe Wu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the 3D(wear) approach is more accurate and precise than the 2D(wear) approach, and is more stable in the face of pelvic position changes. However, the 2D(wear) approach may still be a viable alternative if the wear range is between 100-500 micrometers and suitable X-ray images are available.

Wear Resistance of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Ball Heads for Use in Implants

Svetlana Skvortsova et al.

Summary: The study showed that thermohydrogen treatment and vacuum ion-plasma nitriding have significant effects on the volume and surface structure of ball heads made of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, increasing hardness, improving surface quality, and reducing friction wear. Additionally, the formation of oxynitride nanoscale layer on the surface was found to change the color and improve wear resistance in ball heads implanted in the human body for 12 years.

The Effect of Bottom Profile Dimples on the Femoral Head on Wear in Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Arthroplasty

J. Jamari et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding dimples can reduce contact pressure and wear in total hip arthroplasty, with ball type dimples having the best ability to reduce wear compared to other types, reducing wear by 24.3% to 31% compared to no dimples. This indicates that surface texturing with appropriate dimple bottom geometry can extend the lifetime of hip implants.
