The impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on the prevalence and severity of hospitalizations for pneumonia in children

Noam Eichler et al.

Summary: Following the introduction of PCV7 and PCV13 in the Israeli national immunization plan, pediatric pneumonia hospitalization rates decreased and the distribution of pneumococcal serotypes shifted, without an increase in complications.

Middle Ear Viral Load Considerations in the COVID-19 Era: A Systematic Review

Jeffrey Liaw et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the viral load in the middle ear and mastoid cavity during otologic surgery, concluding that drilling poses the highest risk for aerosol generation and viral exposure. Due to the heterogeneity of clinical data, a meta-analysis was not feasible, but the medical literature consistently demonstrates the presence of respiratory virus nucleic acids in the middle ear, including recent findings of SARS-CoV2.

Similar impact and replacement disease after pneumococcal conjugate vaccine introduction in hospitalised children with invasive pneumococcal disease in Europe and North America

Arto A. Palmu et al.

Summary: A study showed that there was a significant decline in childhood invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the US after the introduction of the 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7), with a greater reduction in outpatient IPD compared to hospitalized IPD. In the US, the proportion of hospitalized IPD cases also increased with the introduction of PCV.

Decline in Seasonal Influenza Vaccine Effectiveness With Vaccination Program Maturation: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

George N. Okoli et al.

Summary: Repeated influenza vaccination may reduce vaccine effectiveness, with lower pooled VE observed as vaccination program matures. Older adults show significantly higher reductions in VE against all influenza viruses, indicating the potential impact of vaccination program maturation on seasonal VE.

Twenty-Year Public Health Impact of 7-and 13-Valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccines in US Children

Matt Wasserman et al.

Summary: The use of Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) in the United States since 2000 has led to a significant reduction in invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) among children. PCVs have averted a substantial number of IPD cases, including meningitis, bacteremia, and bacteremic pneumonia cases. Additionally, vaccination has also reduced healthcare visits for otitis media and hospitalizations for pneumonia, highlighting the significant benefits of PCVs in preventing IPD in children.
