Star polymer networks: a toolbox for cross-linked polymers with controlled structure

Shintaro Nakagawa et al.

Summary: Star polymer networks, constructed by end-linking multiarm polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution, have shown better homogeneity and controllability compared to conventional networks. They have been widely applied in polymer science and functional materials.

Multiarm Star-Crosslinked Hydrogel: Polymer Network with Thermoresponsive Free-End Chains Densely Connected to Crosslinking Points

Shohei Ida et al.

Summary: A novel hydrogel with highly dense stimuli-responsive chains has been developed, mimicking the elaborate structure of soft tissue in biological systems. The gel contains core-crosslinked star-shaped polymers that exhibit thermoresponsive swelling behavior and significantly high mechanical properties, particularly in compressive strength. This hydrogel also shows localized responsive behavior with expansion and shrinkage of the star in one molecule, and has thermoresponsive mechanical toughening property.

Molecular Characterization of Polymer Networks

Scott P. O. Danielsen et al.

Summary: Polymer networks are complex systems composed of molecular components, making it challenging to extrapolate from molecular behavior to overall performance. Various techniques are available to characterize the molecular properties of polymer networks, but strategic combinations of methods are typically needed for comprehensive characterization.

Fast and Large Shrinking of Thermoresponsive Hydrogels with Phase-Separated Structures

Taehun Chung et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared PNIPAAm hydrogels with phase-separated structures by adding NaClO4 salt, which exhibited rapid shrinking upon heating. These hydrogels have a topologically heterogeneous and porous structure highly dependent on NaClO4 concentration, and compared to traditional hydrogels, they show faster and larger volume shrinkage upon heating.
