Cation disorder engineering yields AgBiS2 nanocrystals with enhanced optical absorption for efficient ultrathin solar cells

Yongjie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhanced optical absorption of a ternary chalcogenide semiconductor through engineering cation disorder, which enables the development of highly efficient extremely thin absorber photovoltaic devices. The experimental results demonstrate that colloidal nanocrystals with engineered cation disorder show a significantly higher absorption coefficient compared to other photovoltaic materials, offering a promising solution for environmentally friendly and solution-processed solar cells.

Reaction kinetics and interplay of two different surface states on hematite photoanodes for water oxidation

Jingguo Li et al.

Summary: Understanding the function of surface states on photoanodes is crucial for unraveling water oxidation mechanisms. The study reveals that operation parameters significantly influence the reaction kinetics and dynamic interactions of S1 and S2. Detailed understanding of the reaction kinetics of surface states of hematite photoanodes is crucial for improving their water oxidation performance.

Extraction of mobile charge carrier photogeneration yield spectrum of ultrathin-film metal oxide photoanodes for solar water splitting

Daniel A. Grave et al.

Summary: The article introduces an empirical method to extract the photogeneration yield spectrum xi(λ) through quantum efficiency measurements of ultrathin films. The method can provide insights into the ability of different materials to generate mobile charge carriers through light absorption, and characterize the photoconductivity and photoconversion efficiency.

Triplet exciton formation for non-radiative voltage loss in high-efficiency nonfullerene organic solar cells

Zeng Chen et al.

Summary: Nonfullerene acceptor organic solar cells with power conversion efficiency up to 18% show the formation of NFA triplet exciton as a main non-radiative recombination and energy loss channel. Side-chain fluorination in high-efficiency NFA OSCs efficiently inhibits charge recombination to NFA triplet excitons, leading to higher V-OC and PCE. This paves the way for OSCs with lower V-OC loss and efficiency exceeding 20%.

Counterbalancing light absorption and ionic transport losses in the electrolyte for integrated solar water splitting with III-V/Si dual-junctions

Moritz Koelbach et al.

Summary: Recent progress has been made in developing III-V/Si dual-junction solar cells, which aims to improve the efficiency of Si-based photovoltaic cells and facilitate green hydrogen production through solar water splitting. However, researchers need to consider the impact of light absorption in the electrolyte layer and its effects on Ohmic and transport losses when integrating these cells in a highly efficient photoelectrochemical approach.

Wasted photons: photogeneration yield and charge carrier collection efficiency of hematite photoanodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting

Yifat Piekner et al.

Summary: Hematite is a promising material for photoelectrochemical water splitting, but the champion hematite photoanodes have achieved less than half of their predicted maximal photocurrent due to unproductive optical excitations. A comprehensive method for extraction of photogeneration yield spectrum reveals that the photogeneration yield of a thin film hematite photoanode is less than unity, limiting its maximal photocurrent potential.
