Structure and functioning of Coriaria nepalensis dominated shrublands in degraded hills of Kumaun Himalaya. I. Dry matter dynamics

Pankaj Awasthi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dry matter dynamics of Coriaria nepalensis shrublands in the Kumaun Himalaya region. The research finds that the total biomass and litter fall of C. nepalensis vary across different seasons, and suggests that conservation and management measures should be implemented to improve the structure and function of shrubland ecosystems.

Relationships between soil and microbial biomass properties and annual flux of nutrients in Central Himalaya forests, India

Vijyeta Manral et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the interrelationship among soil attributes and microbial biomass carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in Indian Central Himalaya forest soils, finding significant decreases in soil microbial biomass C, N, and P with a change in forest type from banj oak forest to chir pine forest. Mixed oak-pine forest may be a potential alternative for sustainable management of degraded forest ecosystems in the Central Himalaya region.

Disturbance Induced Changes in Diversity of Medicinal Plants in a Dry Tropical Forest of India

Prasant Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the disappearance of important medicinal plants in tropical dry forests (TDF) due to overexploitation of forest resources. It investigates the diversity of medicinal plants exposed to varying levels of anthropogenic disturbance and analyzes differences in soil properties and vegetation parameters between low and high disturbed sites. The results suggest that forest managers need to consider anthropogenic disturbances in their efforts to conserve medicinal plants in TDFs.

Impact of Forest Fire Frequency on Tree Diversity and Species Regeneration in Tropical Dry Deciduous Forest of Panna Tiger Reserve, Madhya Pradesh, India

Tapas Ray et al.

Summary: The study found that tree species diversity was higher at moderate fire frequencies than controls, but decreased with increasing fire frequency classes. Regeneration of species varied significantly among different fire frequency classes, with fire-tolerant species becoming increasingly dominant. If fires are left unchecked, the dry deciduous forest in Central India may have lower tree diversity in the future.

Spatial and temporal trends in soil N-mineralization rates under the agroforestry systems in Bhabhar belt of Kumaun Himalaya, India

Himani Karki et al.

Summary: The study explored nitrogen mineralization in traditional agroforestry systems using the buried-bag technique in the Bhabhar belt of Kumaun Himalaya. Results showed that season and soil depth significantly affected ammonification, nitrification, and net N-mineralization processes, with differences observed in nitrogen pools and rates among different agroforestry systems.

Low- to Moderate-Level Forest Disturbance Effects on Plant Functional Traits and Associated Soil Microbial Diversity in Western Himalaya

Shipra Singh

Summary: This study quantifies the impact of low to moderate intensity anthropogenic and natural activities on major plant functional traits and soil microbial diversity in western Himalayan temperate forests. The research finds that tree basal area and soil microbial diversity are significantly affected by disturbance intensity, with higher density and microbial biomass in low disturbance sites. Proteobacteria is the most abundant phylum in the microbial community, with different genera dominating in sites with varying disturbance levels.
