Toughening elastomers via microstructured thermoplastic fibers with sacrificial bonds and hidden lengths

Shibo Zou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the concept of achieving large inelastic deformation and high energy dissipation in soft materials by embedding microstructured thermoplastic fibers with sacrificial bonds and hidden lengths in a widely used elastomer. The combination of microstructured fibers and straight fibers in the elastomer composite results in a significant increase in stiffness and total energy to failure compared to the neat elastomer. Applying the sacrificial bonds and hidden lengths toughening mechanism in soft materials at the microscopic scale is essential for the development of novel bioinspired laminated composite materials with high mechanical performance.

Natural load-bearing protein materials

Summary: Biological tissues in animals consist of extracellular matrix with cells embedded in it, while other organisms fabricate protein-based materials that function extracorporeally. Regardless of whether these materials function inside or outside the body, natural protein-based materials perform essential life functions that are highly dependent on their mechanical properties.
