Active and Regioselective Ru Single-Site Heterogeneous Catalystsfor Alpha-Olefin Hydroformylation

Francisco Javier Escobar-Bedia et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous ruthenium catalyst consisting of isolated single atoms and disordered clusters stabilized in a N-doped carbon matrix has been synthesized. It shows good activity and remarkable regioselectivity in the hydroformylation of 1-hexene. Nitrogen heteroatoms play an essential role in increasing catalyst stability and activity by stabilizing Ru(II)-N sites. Single-atom sites are found to be the most active ones. This catalyst holds great promise as an alternative to traditional heterogeneous catalysts and provides a pathway for designing improved Ru heterogeneous catalysts.

The low overpotential regime of acidic water oxidation part I: the importance of O2 detection

Soren B. Scott et al.

Summary: The high overpotential required for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) poses a significant obstacle for producing renewable fuels and chemicals. While ruthenium dioxide is a highly active catalyst for OER in acid, accurately measuring its activity at low overpotentials can be challenging due to high capacitance. In this study, electrochemistry-mass spectrometry was used to measure the OER activity of a series of ruthenium-based catalysts in acidic electrolytes, revealing a previously unobserved Tafel slope and demonstrating the influence of detection method sensitivity on well-known quantities such as onset potential and exchange current density.

Atomic-Step Enriched Ruthenium-Iridium Nanocrystals Anchored Homogeneously on MOF-Derived Support for Efficient and Stable Oxygen Evolution in Acidic and Neutral Media

Junyuan Xu et al.

Summary: Efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for hydrogen production, and a catalyst with surface atomic-step enriched ruthenium-iridium (RuIr) nanocrystals dispersed on a metal organic framework (MOF) derived carbon support (RuIr@CoNC) demonstrates outstanding catalytic performance in various electrolytes. The catalyst shows high mass activities and can sustain continuous OER electrolysis with minimal degradation, attributed to abundant atomic steps maximizing exposure of active sites and strong interaction leading to homogeneous dispersion and firm immobilization of RuIr catalysts.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.

Dual-phase CoP-CoTe2 nanowires as an efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for bipolar membrane-assisted acid-alkaline water splitting

Isilda Amorim et al.

Summary: Electrochemical water splitting using acid-alkaline dual electrolytes can achieve an onset voltage as low as 1.13 V with the use of cobalt phosphide-cobalt ditelluride nanowires as bifunctional catalysts under reverse bias conditions. Furthermore, using a bipolar membrane under forward bias can reduce the voltages required to reach 10 and 100 mA cm(-2) to 1.01 and 1.37 V, respectively, due to electrochemical neutralization from electrolyte crossover. The bipolar membrane water electrolysis can be sustained for at least 100 hours without significant degradation.
