Ultrahard magnetism from mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with metal-metal bonding

Colin A. Gould et al.

Summary: Mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes with a singly occupied lanthanide-lanthanide sigma-bonding orbital were reported, showing outstanding magnetic properties due to the strong alignment of the sigma-bonding and f electrons on both lanthanides. The combination of a well-isolated high-spin ground state and large magnetic anisotropy in (Cp-iPr5)(2)Dy2I3 results in an enormous coercive magnetic field at high temperatures.

Magnetization Dynamics on Isotope-Isomorphic Holmium Single-Molecule Magnets

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study reported the deuteration of metal-binding equatorial water molecules in a single-molecule magnet and the resulting magnetization dynamics, showing that the isotope effect is not only influenced by the paramagnetic metal center but also by the diamagnetic ligands, related to the difference in nuclear spin numbers.

Opening Magnetic Hysteresis by Axial Ferromagnetic Coupling: From Mono-Decker to Double-Decker Metallacrown

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a Dy[15-MCCu-5] (1-Dy) single-molecule magnet (SMM) and a double-decker {Dy[15-MCCu-5]}(2) (2-Dy) SMM were reported. The anisotropy axes of the two Dy-III ions in 2-Dy are nearly collinear, resulting in significantly slower magnetic relaxation times compared to 1-Dy. These complexes exhibit three distinct exponential regimes in their relaxation profiles and hold the largest effective energy barriers among reported d-f SMMs, up to 625 cm(-1).

Field-induced oscillation of magnetization blocking barrier in a holmium metallacrown single-molecule magnet

Si-Guo Wu et al.

Summary: Single-molecule magnets exhibit magnetization blocking with strong magnetic anisotropy, which can be modified through molecular engineering and highlighted by hyperfine coupling. Poor understanding of relaxation mechanisms limits the exploitation of nuclear-spin molecular qubits. This study demonstrates the field-dependent oscillation of magnetization blocking barrier in a holmium metallacrown magnet, driven by the switch of relaxation mechanism involving hyperfine interaction.

Electrophilic Trifluoromethylation of Dimetallofullerene Anions en Route to Air-Stable Single-Molecule Magnets with High Blocking Temperature of Magnetization

Yaofeng Wang et al.

Summary: Electrophilic trifluoromethylation of lanthanide dimetallofullerenes showed high selectivity towards M-2@C-80(-) anions, yielding monoadducts as the main product. Ab Initio Prediction of High-Temperature Magnetic Relaxation Rates in Single-Molecule Magnets

Daniel Reta et al.

Summary: Organometallic molecules based on [Dy(Cp-R)(2)](+) cations have shown potential as high-temperature single-molecule magnets, with significant variations in magnetic properties observed among structurally similar molecules, highlighting the importance of understanding magneto-structural relationships for more efficient design strategies. Our study developed an ab initio spin dynamics methodology capable of quantitatively predicting relaxation rates and revealed that differences in relaxation dynamics among [Dy(Cp-R)(2)](+) cations are mainly determined by crystal field splitting rather than spin-vibrational coupling. Additionally, our predictions suggest an upper limit to the effective barrier to magnetic relaxation, indicating that further improvements to monometallic single-molecule magnets may require shifting vibrational modes off-resonance with electronic excitations.

Single-Molecule Magnets: From Mn12-ac to dysprosium metallocenes, a travel in time

Andoni Zabala-Lekuona et al.

Summary: The discovery of Single-Molecule Magnets in 1993 revolutionized the field of information storage by shrinking the size of bits to molecular levels. Despite initially operating at temperatures near absolute zero, collaboration between chemists and physicists have led to the development of materials that can operate above liquid nitrogen temperatures. The evolution of SMMs has involved the study of various routes towards high performance materials, with each route essential for understanding the quantum dynamics behind these molecules.

Measuring molecular magnets for quantum technologies

Eufemio Moreno-Pineda et al.

Summary: Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit remarkable quantum effects, such as energy barriers, magnetization reversal, and quantum tunneling, which have been observed through bulk magnetometric and spectroscopic techniques. Advanced methods like scanning tunneling microscopy have provided insights into the quantum properties of SMMs at the single-molecule level, paving the way for their application in technological advancements. New techniques involving the use of photons to read the spin degrees of freedom in SMMs are also being explored for future developments.
