Transition-Metal-, Additive-, and Solvent-Free [3+3] Annulation of RCF2-Imidoyl Sulfoxonium Ylides with Cyclopropenones to Give Multifunctionalized CF3-Pyridones

Si Wen et al.

Summary: An efficient strategy was developed to synthesize 1,3,4-triaryl-6-trifluoromethylpyridones in good yields from CF3-imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides and cyclopropenones. The reaction proceeded under transition-metal-, additive-, and solvent-free conditions, generating dimethyl sulfoxide as byproduct and tolerating various functional groups.

Asymmetric transformations from sulfoxonium ylides

Clarice A. D. Caiuby et al.

Summary: Sulfoxonium ylides are important surrogates for diazo compounds, known for their bench stability and handling advantages. While they have been used in a variety of novel chemical reactions in recent years, efficient asymmetric transformations, specifically catalytic enantioselective versions, have only recently been reported, highlighting existing challenges in this area.

Advancing the Logic of Chemical Synthesis: C-H Activation as Strategic and Tactical Disconnections for C-C Bond Construction

Nelson Y. S. Lam et al.

Summary: The design of synthetic routes by retrosynthetic logic is influenced by available transformations. Transition-metal-catalyzed C-H activation is a powerful strategy for C-C bond formation, but its uptake in total synthesis has been tepid due to synthetic intractability and a lack of comprehensive guidelines. This Review addresses these issues and offers a guide to identify retrosynthetic opportunities to generate C-C bonds by C-H activation processes. Comparing traditional approaches and recent C-H activation methods, this Review demonstrates more efficient retrosynthetic strategies enabled by C-H activation for C-C bond construction.

Regioselective and Chemodivergent Synthesis of Azulenolactones and Azulenolactams from Rhodium(III)-Catalyzed Reactions of Azulenecarboxamides with Sulfoxonium Ylides

Seung Cheol Lee et al.

Summary: A regioselective and chemodivergent synthetic approach for azulenolactones and azulenolactams was demonstrated using Rh(III)-catalyzed reaction of N-methoxyazulene-1-carboxamides with sulfoxonium ylides. The method selectively introduced two substituents on a newly introduced double bond, overcoming the natural reactivity of the less reactive 2-position of azulene. This study provides a new scaffold for potential applications in organic synthesis.

Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H Activation/Annulation of Benzamides with Fluorine-Containing Alkynes: A Route to 3-and 4-Fluoroalkylated Isoquinolinones

Tatsuya Kumon et al.

Summary: The C-H activation/annulation reaction of benzamides with fluoroalkylated alkynes in the presence of a Co(acac)(2)center dot 2H(2)O catalyst resulted in the formation of 3- and 4-fluoroalkylated isoquinolinones with high yields and regioselectivities of approximately 70%. These regioisomers were successfully separated and obtained in pure form, with X-ray crystallographic analyses confirming the major or minor regioisomers as 4- or 3-fluoroalkylated isoquinolinones, respectively.

Annulation of CF3-Imidoyl Sulfoxonium Ylides with 1,3-Dicarbonyl Compounds: Access to 1,2,3-Trisubstituted 5-Trifluoromethylpyrroles

Si Wen et al.

Summary: A lithium-bromide-promoted nucleophilic substitution/annulation cascade reaction has been developed for the synthesis of 1,2,3-trisubstituted 5-trifluoromethylpyrroles from CF3-imidoyl sulfoxonium ylides and 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds, yielding products in 27-78% yield. The reaction exhibits a broad substrate scope and produces dimethyl sulfoxide and water as byproducts.

Summary: This study reports a new method for the N-alkenylation of 2-aminopyridines using Ag-catalyzed three-component approach with aldehydes and trifluorodiazoethane, resulting in the formation of (E)-enaminopyridines. The unexpected selectivity demonstrated in this reaction could be further explored for the synthesis of other organic compounds, making it a promising tool for organic chemistry research.
