Sound emission and annihilations in a programmable quantum vortex collider

W. J. Kwon et al.

Summary: This study addresses the challenge of understanding irreversible vortex dynamics in quantum hydrodynamics by creating a programmable vortex collider in a planar, homogeneous atomic Fermi superfluid. By controlling the generation and collision of individual vortices, the research provides a comprehensive view of vortex decay due to mutual friction and vortex-sound interaction. The experiments reveal non-universal dissipative dynamics, suggesting that fermionic quasiparticles localized inside the vortex core significantly contribute to dissipation and open new pathways for exploring quantum turbulence decay vortex by vortex.

Experimental observation of turbulent coherent structures in a superfluid of light

A. Eloy et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigates the nonlinear coherent structures of superfluid light passing an obstacle in an all-optical configuration, revealing different hydrodynamic regimes organized in a unique phase diagram. The focus is on vortices formed in the wake of the obstacle, with analysis of their intensity profile and core radius dependence on healing length. The results pave the way for further research on turbulence in photonic superfluids and offer versatile experimental tools for simulating quantum transport with nonlinear light.

Spontaneous generation, enhanced propagation and optical imprinting of quantized vortices and dark solitons in a polariton superfluid: Towards the control of quantum turbulence

A. Maitre et al.

Summary: The article discusses a new technique for enhancing the propagation of polariton fluids in resonantly pumped polariton superfluids based on the bistability of the polariton system, and introduces methods for generating and controlling various topological excitations. It also explores promising future research directions in the systematic study of quantum turbulence in driven dissipative quantum fluids of light.

Dissipation-enhanced collapse singularity of a nonlocal fluid of light in a hot atomic vapor

Pierre Azam et al.

Summary: The study reveals a double shock-collapse instability in a two-dimensional paraxial fluid of light when using a near-resonant laser propagating through hot atomic vapor. This instability is found to result from the combined effect of nonlocal photon-photon interaction and linear photon losses, with dissipation unexpectedly enhancing the collapse instability. Adjustment of atomic vapor temperature controls the nonlocality range of the interaction, which increases significantly with higher atomic density.
