Tin Halide Perovskites: From Fundamental Properties to Solar Cells

Matteo Pitaro et al.

Summary: Metal halide perovskites, particularly tin-based compounds, show promise for optoelectronic applications, with lead-based compounds being toxic and harmful to the environment. Although tin-based perovskites offer advantages such as near-optimal bandgap and good charge carrier mobilities, their efficiency is currently limited by low defect tolerance, fast crystallization, and oxidative instability. Efforts are being made to improve tin-based perovskite solar cells, focusing on strategies to enhance device performances and address existing challenges in a concerted manner.

Mixed Dimethylammonium/Methylammonium Lead Halide Perovskite Crystals for Improved Structural Stability and Enhanced Photodetection

Aniruddha Ray et al.

Summary: The solvent acidolysis crystallization technique is used to grow mixed DMA/MAPbBr(3) crystals, with the highest dimethylammonium incorporation of 44%. These mixed perovskite crystals exhibit lower phase-transition temperature and suppression of the orthorhombic phase compared to MAPbBr(3). The temperature-dependent photoluminescence properties of the mixed crystals are different from MAPbBr(3) due to different organic cation dynamics. The mixed-crystal devices show higher detectivity and significant enhancements below the phase-transition temperature.

Diverging Expressions of Anharmonicity in Halide Perovskites

Adi Cohen et al.

Summary: Lead-based halide perovskite crystals exhibit strongly anharmonic structural dynamics, which may be the reason behind their exceptional photovoltaic properties. Cs2AgBiBr6, a lead-free alternative, has been studied as well but does not show the same photovoltaic activity. By comparing Cs2AgBiBr6 and CsPbBr3, it is found that their expression of anharmonic behavior differs significantly.

Sublattice Distortion Enabled Strong Interplay between Phonon Vibrations, Electron-Phonon Coupling, and Self-Trapped Excitonic Emissions in Cs2Ag1-xNaxBiCl6 Double Perovskites

Athrey C. Dakshinamurthy et al.

Summary: Sublattice distortion resulting from alloying compositionally distinct double perovskites affects the photoluminescence emission, mainly through the formation and recombination of self-trapped excitons (STE). The intensity and quantum yield of STE emission depend on the alloy composition, with the highest intensity observed at a specific composition due to a large change in sublattice distortion. The variation in photoluminescence properties follows a similar trend as that of bandgap and phonon vibrational changes caused by sublattice distortion.

Characterization of the Ammonium Bending Vibrations in Two-Dimensional Hybrid Lead-Halide Perovskites from Raman Spectroscopy and First-Principles Calculations

Sydney N. Lavan et al.

Summary: Two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (2D HOIPs) are important energy materials with electronic properties influenced by coupling between inorganic and organic layers. Raman spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations were used to study Raman-active modes in four 2D HOIPs, revealing how the inorganic lattice framework modulates the vibrational properties of the organic cations. The properties of Raman-active ammonium bending modes can effectively probe the local microscopic structure of the inorganic lattice framework in 2D HOIPs.

Coherent vibrational dynamics reveals lattice anharmonicity in organic-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals

Tushar Debnath et al.

Summary: The study reveals that halide ions in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites can influence the lattice vibrations of nanocrystals, leading to different coherent vibronic wave packets generation. Additionally, it shows that the PbI64- unit in FAPbI(3) nanocrystals can vibrate more freely compared to FAPbBr(3) nanocrystals, resulting in higher harmonics of fundamental modes. This intrinsic anharmonicity in the lead-halide framework plays a key role in the stability and energy transfer of perovskites.

Cooperative B-site octahedral tilting, distortion and A-site conformational change induced phase transitions of a 2D lead halide perovskite

Muhammad Azeem et al.

Summary: This study investigates the high-pressure structural evolution of a 2D hybrid lead halide perovskite, revealing that its phase transition is primarily driven by the tilting of the PbI6 octahedra and the conformational change of the BA cation. Density functional theory calculations show a slight tilt and distortion of the PbI6 octahedra during the transition, leading to a red-shift in photoluminescence emission and decreased intensity. The findings highlight the role of inorganic framework freedom in driving phase transitions of 2D HOIPs.
