Catalysis within coordination cages

Yadan Xue et al.

Summary: Coordination cages with well-defined cavities have attracted attention for their structural aesthetics and unique properties in various fields. This review summarizes the achievements of these materials in catalytic applications, including their use as catalysts and their ability to encapsulate catalytic cofactors. Furthermore, the current challenges and great potential of coordination cages in catalysis are discussed.

Interaction of anions with the surface of a coordination cage in aqueous solution probed by their effect on a cage-catalysed Kemp elimination

Michael D. Ludden et al.

Summary: The octanuclear M8L12 coordination cage can catalyze the Kemp elimination reaction of 5-nitro-1,2-benzisoxazole with hydroxide, resulting in the production of 2-cyano-4-nitrophenolate. The reaction occurs at the external surface of the cage, and the rate of catalysis is influenced by the presence of added anions which displace hydroxide ions from the cage surface. Different anions show varying binding affinities to the cationic cage surface, impacting the catalyzed Kemp elimination reaction.

Incorporation of homogeneous organometallic catalysts into metal-organic frameworks for advanced heterogenization: a review

Sandeep Kumar et al.

Summary: Catalysis is a promising technique in various fields, with heterogeneous catalysts like MOFs being used to convert homogeneous catalysts for improved reusability and selectivity. MOFs, as organic-inorganic hybrid materials, have been developed as candidates for various applications by incorporating homogeneous catalysts into a heterogeneous framework. This new approach combines the properties of both compounds to generate hybrid heterogeneous catalysts with the benefits of both the organometallic compound and the MOFs constituents.
