Thirdhand smoke from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, methamphetamine and cocaine: Partitioning, reactive fate, and human exposure in indoor environments

Kristen Yeh et al.

Summary: Thirdhand smoke (THS) refers to the contamination that remains indoors after smoking. This study reviews the composition and behavior of different types of indoor THS, including from tobacco, e-cigarettes, cannabis, and illicit substances. Modeling results suggest that volatile compounds are inhaled, while water-soluble compounds are absorbed by the skin.

In utero and early-life exposure to thirdhand smoke causes profound changes to the immune system

Antoine M. Snijders et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to thirdhand smoke in utero and during early life significantly affects the immune system and the development of leukemia/lymphoma in mice, particularly more pronounced in male mice. Additionally, thirdhand smoke exposure may contribute to carcinogenesis by lowering the host defense to other toxic exposures.

Chemical changes in thirdhand smoke associated with remediation using an ozone generator

Xiaochen Tang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the chemical changes in thirdhand smoke aerosols induced by high levels of ozone, showing the potential of ozone to remove harmful chemicals from indoor surfaces. However, ozone treatment also results in the generation of harmful gases and ultrafine particles as byproducts.

Thirdhand smoke associations with the gut microbiomes of infants admitted to a neonatal intensive care unit: An observational study

Thomas F. Northrup et al.

Summary: The study found differences in gut microbiomes of NICU-admitted infants with THS-related exposure, with infants from non-smoking households or with lower NICU-furniture nicotine content showing higher microbiome alpha-diversity. Associations between relative abundances of certain bacterial genera and urine cotinine, surface nicotine, and/or household cigarette use were observed.

Evaluating Indoor Air Chemical Diversity, Indoor-to-Outdoor Emissions, and Surface Reservoirs Using High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Roger Sheu et al.

Summary: Detailed offline speciation of gas- and particle-phase organic compounds was conducted using gas/liquid chromatography with traditional and high-resolution mass spectrometers in a hybrid targeted/nontargeted analysis. Observations showed that indoor gas-phase organic compounds had higher abundances compared to outdoor environments and were strongly correlated with controlled emissions of tracer species. After ventilation, indoor emissions of volatile organic compounds doubled.

Formation of Oxidized Gases and Secondary Organic Aerosol from a Commercial Oxidant-Generating Electronic Air Cleaner

Taekyu Joo et al.

Summary: This study found that during the operation of air purifiers, the rates of production of oxygenated volatile organic compounds and secondary aerosols increased, suggesting that organic acids generated during VOC oxidation may lead to aerosol formation. In addition, an increase in nitrate, sulfate, and chloride was observed, indicating the formation of organic nitrate, organic sulfate, and organic chloride.
