CMB-S4: Forecasting Constraints on Primordial Gravitational Waves

Kevork Abazajian et al.

Summary: CMB-S4 is the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment, designed to improve the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. This study presents a forecasting framework that uses a power-spectrum-based semianalytic projection tool to optimize constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio. The framework is unique in its use of information from current CMB experiments to predict the effectiveness of future CMB-polarization endeavors. The study also includes map-based validation studies, allowing for additional complexity and independent verification of the forecasts.

In-flight polarization angle calibration for LiteBIRD: blind challenge and cosmological implications

N. Krachmalnicoff et al.

Summary: We demonstrate the in-flight polarization angle calibration for the LiteBIRD strategic large class mission and assess its impact on the measurement of the tensor-to-scalar ratio parameter, r, using simulated data. Our calibration method relies on nulling the cross correlation of the polarized signal in each frequency channel. We find that angle miscalibration biases results obtained with parametric fitting methods but has less impact on algorithms that do not assume foreground properties. Both component separation algorithms result in unbiased estimation of the r parameter once the miscalibration angles are corrected. This work provides a robust framework for polarization experiments and offers insights for the design of future missions.

Frequency-dependent constraints on cosmic birefringence from the LFI and HFI Planck Data Release 4

J. R. Eskilt

Summary: This study presents new constraints on the frequency dependence of the cosmic birefringence angle using data from the Planck Data Release 4 polarization maps. The results are consistent with predictions from an axion field coupled to electromagnetism and Faraday rotation from local magnetic fields. The findings provide valuable insights into the nature of cosmic birefringence.

New physics from the polarized light of the cosmic microwave background

Eiichiro Komatsu

Summary: The polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) holds clues to the nature of dark matter and dark energy, as well as the origin of structures in the Universe. Two phenomena that could be observed in CMB data are cosmic birefringence, which could indicate violations of symmetry, and the presence of primordial gravitational waves generated during cosmic inflation.

Computing microwave background polarization power spectra from cosmic birefringence

Hongbo Cai et al.

Summary: We present a new publicly available code called class_rot that modifies class for fast nonperturbative calculation of cosmic microwave background polarization power spectra, including both isotropic and anisotropic polarization rotation caused by cosmic birefringence. The implementation of class_rot is described in terms of both mathematical formalism and coding architecture.

Simons Observatory: Constraining inflationary gravitational waves with multitracer B-mode delensing

Toshiya Namikawa et al.

Summary: This study introduces and validates a delensing framework for the Simons Observatory to improve constraints on inflationary gravitational waves. The framework combines internal CMB lensing maps with maps of cosmic infrared background and galaxy density maps for better constraints. Testing on simulations shows that the delensing performance is minimally impacted by survey noise, and the constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio are improved significantly.

L2-CalSat: A Calibration Satellite for Ultra-Sensitive CMB Polarization Space Missions

Francisco J. Casas et al.

Summary: This work proposes the use of a calibration satellite (L2-CalSat) flying in formation with a Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization mission to improve measurement accuracy. The satellite serves as a perfectly known reference signal source, reducing uncertainty in polarization measurements. By studying the preliminary design of L2-CalSat and the influence of relative position between spacecrafts, significant improvement in performance of CMB space missions is achieved without requiring new technological developments.

Ultra-light dark matter

Elisa G. M. Ferreira

Summary: Ultra-light dark matter, composed of bosons with masses ranging from 10(-24)eV < m < eV, has garnered attention for its ability to form a Bose-Einstein condensate or superfluid on galactic scales. Various models have been proposed, including fuzzy dark matter, self-interacting fuzzy dark matter, and DM superfluid, with the potential to reconcile the cold DM picture with small-scale behavior. These models present a rich phenomenology and are being tested using astrophysical and cosmological observations.

CMB mode coupling with isotropic polarization rotation

Toshiya Namikawa

Summary: This study introduces a new analysis technique to measure the effect of isotropic polarization rotation and its mode coupling in the CMB. By deriving and discussing parity violation in observed CMB, constraints on the isotropic polarization angle can be obtained, showing comparable results to using the EB cross-power spectrum in future high-sensitivity polarization experiments.

Measurements of the E-mode polarization and temperature-E-mode correlation of the CMB from SPT-3G 2018 data

D. Dutcher et al.

Summary: In this study, measurements of the E-mode polarization power spectrum and temperature-E-mode cross-power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background were presented using data collected by SPT-3G. The results improve upon previous findings, providing constraints on cosmological parameters and showing a good fit with the.aCDM cosmological model. Combining the SPT-3G and Planck data sets led to tighter constraints on the aCDM model without significant shifts in central values.

Probing axionlike particles via cosmic microwave background polarization

Tomohiro Fujita et al.

Summary: The study suggests that ALPs can rotate the linear polarization of photons and convert the cosmic microwave background E mode to the B mode through the ALP-photon coupling. By deriving the relationship between ALP dynamics and rotation angle, the current and future sensitivities of CMB observations to the ALP-photon coupling were calculated. Neglected fluctuations of the ALP field at the observer have been found to induce significant isotropic rotation of the CMB polarization.
