Tight Coupling of Surface and In-Plant Biochemistry and Convection Governs Key Fine Particulate Components over the Amazon Rainforest

Manish Shrivastava et al.

Summary: Combining aircraft measurements and model simulations, this study reveals the important role of in-plant biochemistry in fine particulate formation and atmosphere-biosphere- climate interactions over the Amazon rainforest. The study shows that direct emissions of certain gases formed by in-plant biochemical reactions explain a significant portion of sub-micrometer aerosol particles in the upper troposphere.

Observations of Aerosol, Cloud, Turbulence, and Radiation Properties at the Top of the Marine Boundary Layer over the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean: The ACORES Campaign

Holger Siebert et al.

Summary: The ACORES campaign in July 2017 focused on investigating aerosol particles, stratocumulus microphysical and radiative properties, and turbulence parameters in the eastern North Atlantic around Graciosa and Pico Islands. The observations revealed high variability of turbulent cloud-top structure on horizontal scales below 100 meters, significant inhomogeneities in cloud-top brightness temperature on scales well below 100 meters, and completely different aerosol properties in the marine boundary layer and free troposphere.

The Impact of Slantwise Descending Dry Intrusions on the Marine Boundary Layer and Air-Sea Interface Over the ARM Eastern North Atlantic Site

E. Ilotoviz et al.

Summary: This study combines observations and reanalysis data to analyze the impact of dry intrusions (DIs) on boundary layer characteristics and clouds. It was found that during the winter months, DIs lead to deepening of the boundary layer, changes in cloud, precipitation, and thermodynamic properties, with substantial cooling and drying of the lower troposphere inducing strong surface heat fluxes. The results suggest that DI events affect the boundary layer and cloud structure at the ENA site approximately 21% of the time in winter months, with different responses of cloud fields to DI-fronts compared to non-DI fronts.

The particle phase state during the biomass burning events

Yuechen Liu et al.

Summary: Through experiments and observations, it was found that under dry conditions, biomass burning aerosols (BBA) are in a non-solid state, differing from secondary organic aerosols (SOA). This suggests that under dry conditions, the diffusion coefficient of gaseous molecules in BBA may be much higher than in SOA.

Aerosol Composition, Mixing State, and Phase State of Free Tropospheric Particles and Their Role in Ice Cloud Formation

Nurun Nahar Lata et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties and ice nucleation activity of free tropospheric particles collected at a remote observatory in the North Atlantic Ocean. It was found that particles with different transport patterns had significant differences in size-resolved chemical composition, mixing state, and phase state. Particles with higher viscosity were found to be more ice active in the deposition mode at specific temperatures. This research provides a better understanding of the role of long-range transported free tropospheric aerosols in ice cloud formation.

Long-term trends of black carbon and particle number concentration in the lower free troposphere in Central Europe

Jia Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that in cold months, FT conditions were more prevalent than in warm months, while the measured aerosol parameters showed different seasonal patterns for FT and PBL-influenced conditions. Pollutants in PBL-influenced conditions are more likely to be transported to high altitudes due to mountainous topography, leading to higher concentrations and more distinct seasonal variations, whereas lower FT conditions showed decreasing aerosol concentration trends.

Summary: SOA's glass transition temperature and viscosity play important roles in the formation and evolution of atmospheric particulate matter; the Tg and viscosity of dry SOA are mainly influenced by different species at different locations and seasons; significant vertical variations exist in SOA, with winter exhibiting glass transition at lower altitudes.

Summary: The study reveals that long-range transport of continental emissions affects the properties of atmospheric aerosol particles and cloud condensation nuclei in remote regions, leading to changes in the percentage contribution of organics and inorganics. These observations provide valuable data for atmospheric models simulating the sources and composition of particles in the eastern North Atlantic region.

Viscosity and phase state of aerosol particles consisting of sucrose mixed with inorganic salts

Summary: This study investigated the viscosity of mixed organic-inorganic aerosol particles at various relative humidities. Results showed that particle viscosity increased as humidity decreased, transitioning from liquid to semi-solid or even solid states. Experimental measurements and model predictions demonstrated good agreement, supporting the existence of different phase states in tropospheric aerosols.
