Muscles from the same muscle group do not necessarily share common drive: evidence from the human triceps surae

Francois Hug et al.

Summary: This study showed that the three muscles composing the human triceps surae share minimal common drive during isometric contractions. The results suggest that reducing the number of effectively controlled degrees of freedom may not always be the strategy used by the central nervous system to control movements. Independent control of some, but not all, synergist muscles may allow for more flexible control to comply with secondary goals such as joint stabilization.

Individual differences in the neural strategies to control the lateral and medial head of the quadriceps during a mechanically constrained task

Simon Avrillon et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant individual differences in the distribution of neural drive between VL and VM muscles during a single-joint isometric task, as well as in the proportion of neural drive shared within and between these muscles. The coherence levels within and between muscles varied greatly across individuals, with a significant positive correlation between the two outcomes.

Approaches to revealing the neural basis of muscle synergies: a review and a critique

Vincent C. K. Cheung et al.

Summary: Current research focuses on exploring the neural basis of muscle synergies within the central nervous system, investigating the organization of synergies and the stimulations of relevant cortical loci, but the involvement of motor cortex in organizing synergies remains uncertain. Progress may be facilitated by incorporating prior knowledge from neurophysiology into models and algorithms.

Summary: The study assessed the inter-operator reliability of motor unit spike trains identification in HDsEMG decomposition, showing that operators can achieve almost identical results when provided with the same data and instructions.

Synergistic Organization of Neural Inputs from Spinal Motor Neurons to Extrinsic and Intrinsic Hand Muscles

Simone Tanzarella et al.

Summary: The study revealed a synergistic organization in motor neuron activities during complex tasks, leading to a reduction in output dimensionality. By factorizing the output of motor neurons, four motor neuron synergies and four functionally similar muscle synergies were identified. Motor neuron synergies were found to better discriminate individual finger forces compared to muscle synergies and were more consistent with the expected role of muscles in activating each finger.
