Multi-reference many-body perturbation theory for nuclei

M. Frosini et al.

Summary: This article presents the first realistic results of a novel multi-reference perturbation theory (PGCM-PT) that can accurately describe the ground and low-lying excited states of complex nuclei within a symmetry-conserving scheme. The study demonstrates that PGCM-PT(2) can reproduce the exact binding energies of closed and open-shell nuclei with high accuracy and can capture essential corrections to low-lying excitation energies by including dynamical correlations.

Multi-reference many-body perturbation theory for nuclei

M. Frosini et al.

Summary: Perturbative and non-perturbative expansion methods are important tools for ab initio calculations in nuclear physics. This work generalizes a versatile method by formulating a perturbative expansion on top of a multi-reference unperturbed state mixing deformed non-orthogonal Bogoliubov vacua. The method pays attention to symmetry restoration and significantly reduces the dimensionality of the linear problem to be solved.

Universal trend of charge radii of even-even Ca-Zn nuclei

Markus Kortelainen et al.

Summary: The radii of nuclear charge distributions provide information about the forces inside the atomic nucleus. The global behavior of nuclear charge radii is determined by nuclear matter properties, while the local trends are influenced by the motion of protons and neutrons. By analyzing even-even nuclei from calcium to zinc, two advanced theories based on nuclear interactions reveal a universal pattern and demonstrate the impact of nuclear properties and shell structure on the differential charge radii.

Ab Initio Limits of Atomic Nuclei

S. R. Stroberg et al.

Summary: This study predicts the limits of existence of atomic nuclei, the proton and neutron drip lines, by utilizing a chiral nucleon interaction and in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations for nearly 700 isotopes. Experimental data confirms that the predictions are consistent with the theoretical uncertainties where the drip lines are known. Predictions for neutron-rich isotopes are provided for testing at rare-isotope beam facilities.

Charge radii of exotic potassium isotopes challenge nuclear theory and the magic character of N=32

A. Koszorus et al.

Summary: Nuclear charge radii serve as sensitive probes of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and nuclear matter properties, posing a challenge for nuclear theory. Experimental evidence suggests a new magic neutron number at N=32 in the calcium region, with unexpectedly large increases in charge radii raising questions about nuclear size evolution in neutron-rich systems. Advanced nuclear theories offer different explanations for the odd-even variations and notable increase in charge radii beyond N=28, highlighting limitations in our understanding of neutron-rich systems and issues in current nuclear theory models.

Moving away from singly-magic nuclei with Gorkov Green's function theory

V Soma et al.

Summary: Ab initio calculations of bulk nuclear properties are presented for seven complete isotopic chains, showing overall good agreement with experimental data, especially for differential energies and charge radii under certain interactions. Neutron magic numbers N=28,32,34 emerge and evolve, but pairing gaps are systematically underestimated, leading to deterioration in theoretical descriptions for certain nuclei.

In-medium k-body reduction of n-body operators: A flexible symmetry-conserving approach based on the sole one-body density matrix

M. Frosini et al.

Summary: The computational cost of ab initio nuclear structure calculations is particularly severe when dealing with three-nucleon interactions, especially as many-body methods aim to extend beyond mid-mass nuclei. To avoid complications, a new approximation technique involving the convolution of the initial operator with a symmetry-invariant one-body matrix has been developed and tested numerically. This novel method has been shown to generate errors below 2-3% across a wide range of nuclei, observables, and many-body methods when used with a low-resolution Hamiltonian.

Coupled-Cluster Calculations of Neutrinoless Double-β Decay in 48Ca

S. Novario et al.

Summary: The study computes the nuclear matrix element for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Ca-48 using coupled-cluster theory and nuclear interactions from chiral effective field theory. The results show a relatively small matrix element for Ca-48. Additionally, the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino double-beta decay of Ca-48 is calculated with a quenching factor deduced from recent two-body currents calculation.

Symmetry restoration in mean-field approaches

J. A. Sheikh et al.

Summary: The mean-field approximation based on effective interactions or density functionals is crucial for describing large quantum many-body systems that cannot be handled with ab initio methods. Group-theory techniques for restoring broken symmetries and various approximation methods are discussed, along with applications of projection methods in nuclear models, energy density functional theory, and other mesoscopic systems. Challenges in applying symmetry restoration methods to EDF theories are highlighted.

Effective field theory approach to rotational bands in odd-mass nuclei

I. K. Alnamlah et al.

Summary: The study extends the effective field theory developed for describing rotational bands in even-even nuclei to odd-mass nuclei. The approach involves organizing the treatment of a particle coupled to a rotor as a model-independent expansion in powers of the overall system's angular velocity. Results for various nuclei including Tc-99, Dy-159, Er-167, Er-169, Tm-167, Tm-169, W-183, U-235, and Pu-239 are presented up to fourth order in the angular velocity, with the accuracy and breakdown scale of the effective field theory understood based on the single-particle and vibrational energy scales in each nucleus.

In-medium similarity renormalization group with three-body operators

Summary: The IMSRG approach has been extended to include three-body operators in the IMSRG(3) approximation. Systematic benchmarking shows that IMSRG(3) improves over IMSRG(2) relative to exact results. Approximate IMSRG(3) truncations based on computational cost are able to reproduce much of the systematic improvement offered by the full IMSRG(3).

Natural orbitals for many-body expansion methods

J. Hoppe et al.

Summary: The many-body problem for medium-mass systems is commonly addressed using wave-function expansion methods, with perturbatively constructed natural orbitals showing significant improvement in many-body applications. A systematic benchmark of natural orbitals in nonperturbative many-body calculations using the in-medium similarity renormalization group approach has demonstrated the computational savings and extended reach of ab initio methods towards heavier masses and higher accuracy.
