Hydroxychloroquine in patients with inflammatory and erosive osteoarthritis of the hands: results of the OA-TREAT study-a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicentre, investigator-initiated trial

Claudia Kedor et al.

Summary: OA-TREAT is the first large randomized PBO controlled trial focusing on EOA, and the results showed that HCQ was no more effective than PBO for changes in pain, function, and radiographic scores in the 52-week period. The overall safety findings were consistent with the known profile of HCQ.

Colchicine is not effective for reducing osteoarthritic hand pain compared to placebo: a randomised, placebo-controlled trial (COLAH)

C. R. Davis et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of 1 mg daily colchicine vs. placebo on hand pain and function in older adults with hand osteoarthritis over 12 weeks. It was found that colchicine did not significantly reduce pain, tender and swollen joint count, or increase grip strength in symptomatic hand osteoarthritis. The results do not support the use of colchicine in hand osteoarthritis.

Methotrexate treatment in hand osteoarthritis refractory to usual treatments: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

Stephanie Ferrero et al.

Summary: The study found that weekly doses of 10-mg MTX did not show superiority over the placebo in terms of pain relief at 3 or 12 months, but may have some impact on structural progression. Synovitis on MRI could be associated with the erosive structural evolution of joints.

New Trends in Injection-Based Therapy for Thumb-Base Osteoarthritis: Where Are We and where Are We Going?

Sara Tenti et al.

Summary: Thumb-base osteoarthritis (TBOA) is a common condition that mostly affects post-menopausal women, leading to limited therapeutic options and debate on the efficacy of injection-based therapy. Recommendations from international scientific societies may not align with clinical practice, necessitating further investigation into the efficacy and safety of injection-based therapy for TBOA.
