Valorization of sunflower by-product using microwave-assisted extraction to obtain a rich protein flour: Recovery of chlorogenic acid, phenolic content and antioxidant capacity

Grazielle Nathia-Neves et al.

Summary: This study focused on the extraction of chlorogenic acid (CGA) from sunflower by-product using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), finding that the optimal conditions were ethanol 70% and 30 seconds extraction time. The MAE process proved to be fast and efficient in obtaining CGA-rich extracts with antioxidant capacity.

Sunflower seed byproduct and its fractions for food application: An attempt to improve the sustainability of the oil process

Josemar de Oliveira Goncalves Filho et al.

Summary: Sunflower is a major oil crop with its byproducts being utilized for various applications in the food industry due to their high protein and phenolic compound content. The byproducts can be transformed into flours/ingredients to enhance nutritional and functional value of foods, while protein isolates and phenolic compounds obtained can improve technological properties and nutritional value of food products and be used for developing bioactive food packaging.
