Modeling COVID-19 scenarios for the United States

Robert C. Reiner et al.

Summary: This study uses data from the first 8 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States to explore potential future scenarios of social distancing mandates and mask use at the state level, projecting the epidemic's course through winter 2021.

Quarantine and testing strategies in contact tracing for SARS-CoV-2: a modelling study

Billy J. Quilty et al.

Summary: The study suggests that testing contacts and reducing quarantine duration can be effective in limiting onward transmission of COVID-19, with potential for substantial reduction in the length of quarantine with a small excess in transmission risk. Adherence to quarantine and self-isolation, along with decreasing test and trace delays, are key factors in improving the effectiveness of these strategies. Further research is needed to evaluate the costs and benefits of implementing such strategies as policy.

Development of the reproduction number from coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 case data in Germany and implications for political measures

Sahamoddin Khailaie et al.

Summary: A compartmental infection dynamics model was used to estimate the time-varying reproduction number of viral spreading in Germany and its federal states, showing that the implementation of non-pharmaceutical interventions can reduce the reproduction number, but partial release of interventions may lead to increases. Real-time monitoring of transmission dynamics is crucial for evaluating the outbreak extent, short-term projections for the healthcare system burden, and the response to policy changes.

Estimating COVID-19 mortality in Italy early in the COVID-19 pandemic

B. Buchmann et al.

Summary: The authors estimated COVID-19 mortality in Italy using a counterfactual time series analysis, finding that the actual deaths were approximately 1.5 times higher than official statistics. The proportion of population deaths and infection rates were also calculated for the most affected regions, showing significant differences from reported numbers.

Insights into household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from a population-based serological survey

Qifang Bi et al.

Summary: This study found that the risk of infection from household exposure to a single infected member was higher than from extra-household exposure during the first pandemic wave. Young children had a lower risk of infection from household members, while working-age adults had the highest extra-household infection risk. Additionally, seropositive asymptomatic household members had significantly lower odds of infecting others compared to symptomatic individuals, contributing to a smaller proportion of household infections.
