In Situ Investigation of the Cytotoxic and Interfacial Characteristics of Titanium When Galvanically Coupled with Magnesium Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Abdelilah Asserghine et al.

Summary: The cytotoxic properties of galvanically coupled Ti-Mg particles are mainly attributed to Mg, but the role of Ti cathode has been ignored. The study found that the Ti surface became electrochemically active when coupled with Mg, leading to an increase in pH around the surface. The galvanic coupling of Ti and Mg, as well as the alkaline pH environment, contributed to the cytotoxic effects by enhancing generation of reactive oxygen species.
