Due to high demand of diesel, which is becoming scarcer, and the pollution caused by fossil fuels, biofuels can be an alternative as they have harmless emissions. However, most biofuels are produced from vegetable oils, which also have high demand in the food industry, leading to higher prices. Using waste cooking oil for biodiesel production can make the raw material cost insignificant.
Due to high demand of diesel, it is becoming more and scarcer. Furthermore, fossil fuels are the major cause of air pollution. Biofuels can be an alternative to diesel as the emissions from them is harmless. Although, most of the biofuels are produced from vegetable oils that also has higher demand in food industry. Due to that the price of vegetable oils is also higher. Using waste cooking oil to produce biodiesel will make the price of raw material insignificant. The direct use of vegetable oils in compression ignition engines is not viable due to their free fatty acid content, chemical composition, and high viscosity. They are required to be modified for effective use. Oil viscosity can be suitable reduced by transesterification reaction which converts it into biodiesel fuel or biofuel. In the present work, biofuel is prepared from waste vegetable oil and its basic properties are tested. The prepared biofuel showed iodine value of 97% and flash point of 104 degrees C.
