Coupling of bioelectrochemical toluene oxidation and trichloroethene reductive dechlorination for single-stage treatment of groundwater containing multiple contaminants

Carolina Cruz Viggi et al.

Summary: The study presented a method for treating synthetic groundwater containing toluene and TCE in a bioelectric well, where microbial oxidation of toluene generated electric current to facilitate reductive dechlorination. Further process optimization is needed to maximize the efficiency of toluene degradation and current generation.

Novel dichloromethane-fermenting bacteria in the Peptococcaceae family

Sophie Holland et al.

Summary: The study identified a microorganism called DCMF that can transform toxic dichloromethane into environmentally benign acetate in anaerobic environments. Through stable carbon isotope experiments, it was shown that DCMF assimilates carbon from DCM and bicarbonate via the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. DCMF is the first anaerobic population known to degrade dichloromethane, while also metabolizing non-chlorinated substrates.

Enhanced dechlorination of 1,2-dichloropropane to propene in a bioelectrochemical system mediated by Dehalogenimonas

David Fernandez-Verdejo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that using different carbon-based cathodic electrode materials in BES can promote the growth of Dehalogenimonas and the degradation of 1,2-DCP, with the graphite brush electrode showing better performance.
