Complete separation of colorants from polymeric materials for cost-effective recycling of waste textiles

Bingnan Mu et al.

Summary: Currently, only 1% of waste textiles are recycled due to dye-related problems, such as uncontrollable color quality of regenerated fibers. Technologies for complete color removal face challenges, with dye-destruction damaging polymers and dye-extraction failing to remove all dyes. Minimization of fiber density by solvents and temperatures has been shown to effectively remove disperse, acid, and direct dyes from different types of fibers without altering the chemical structures.

Tunnel structured manganese dioxides for the gaseous ammonia adsorption and its regeneration performance

Yu Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, different tunnel structured MnO2 materials were evaluated for the adsorption of gaseous ammonia. The alpha-MnO2 exhibited the best adsorption performance due to its well-developed tunnel structure and abundance of surface acidic sites. Furthermore, alpha-MnO2 can be regenerated and recycled at a relatively low temperature, making it an attractive adsorbent for ammonia purification.

Circular recycling of polyester textile waste using a sustainable catalyst

Zengwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of circular recycling of polyester textile waste through a glycolysis process using environmentally friendly Mg-Al double oxides pellets as catalyst. The results show that the pellet catalysts can be cycled three times without losing structural integrity or catalytic activity, producing regenerated PET with comparable quality to virgin PET fibers.

Kinetic and thermodynamic studies on gas adsorption behaviour of natural fibres

Bin Tang et al.

Summary: The gas adsorption properties of key natural fibers, wool and cotton, were investigated through time-resolved infrared spectroscopy monitoring the adsorption process of ammonia. The Langmuir isotherm model best described the adsorption process, with monolayer adsorption onto the fibers. The study also found differences in adsorption capacity and activation energy values between wool and cotton.

Improving ammonia uptake performance of zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks through open metal site insertion strategy

Ehsan Binaeian et al.

Summary: This study reports the development of a new type of MOFs by inserting transition metals into the bipyridine dicarboxylate ligand-containing Zr-based MOF through one-pot synthesis and post-synthesis functionalization methods. Characterization and evaluation of obtained MOFs show that Mn-containing MOFs modified by post-synthesis functionalization method displayed the highest ammonia adsorption capacity, while Mn-containing MOFs processed by one-pot synthesis method showed the highest overall adsorption capacity. Additionally, Co-containing MOFs modified by one-pot synthesis method exhibited a hydrogen adsorption capacity comparable or superior to previously reported values.

Rice husk-based adsorbents for removing ammonia: Kinetics, thermodynamics and adsorption mechanism

Wenli Bai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behaviors of ammonia onto different biomass rice husk-based adsorbents, revealing their adsorption capacities, kinetic data, and thermodynamic activation parameters. Possible adsorption mechanisms involving chemisorption based on Lewis acid-base reaction were proposed, contributing to the design of efficient adsorbents for VOCs and odors removal and air pollution control.

Coloured powder from coloured textile waste for fabric printing application

Linli Gan et al.

Summary: This research aims to recycle waste textiles and the colours within them by grinding waste cotton fabric into powders of different particle sizes and printing them onto cotton fabric to create new coloured fabrics. Different particle sizes of powders affect the colour depth, but not the overall fabric colour, with 5 μm powders showing the best colour and rub fastness in printed fabrics. This study demonstrates a potential new application for colored textile waste.
