Uncovering a 'sensitive window' of multisensory and motor neuroplasticity in the cerebrum and cerebellum of male and female starlings

Jasmien Orije et al.

Summary: Research on seasonal neuroplasticity in songbirds has traditionally focused on male song control systems and testosterone levels. However, a new longitudinal study found sexual dimorphisms in the microstructure of the song control system, with males showing hemispheric asymmetries and females exhibiting higher interhemispheric connectivity. Only females with larger brains were found to sing, and they showed differences in song behavior compared to males, involving the hippocampus. Both sexes experienced multisensory neuroplasticity during the photosensitive period.
