Voice emotion recognition by Mandarin-speaking pediatric cochlear implant users in Taiwan

Yung-Song Lin et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of obligatory lexical tone learning on speech emotion recognition and cross-cultural differences between the United States and Taiwan. Results showed that normal-hearing children performed better in emotion recognition compared to children with cochlear implants. Female speakers' emotions were also more easily recognized than male speakers'. Age at test had a significant effect on voice recognition performance. Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants showed a positive effect of age at test on emotion recognition, indicating the importance of learning and brain plasticity. Improvements in pitch presentation and rehabilitation efforts are needed to enhance the transmission and perception of voice emotion in Mandarin.
