Converging towards a common representation of large-scale photosynthesis

Chris Huntingford et al.

Summary: Ecological research has mainly focused on identifying how different environmental factors restrict photosynthesis, but there is less attention on accurately modeling the transition between limitations as drivers change. Whether these changes are modeled as a single switch or involve an intermediate period of co-limitation can significantly impact estimated levels of photosynthesis.

On the Treatment of Soil Water Stress in GCM Simulations of Vegetation Physiology

P. L. Vidale et al.

Summary: The current land surface models in weather and climate models use coupled photosynthesis-stomatal conductance models to determine surface fluxes governing terrestrial energy, water and carbon budgets. Different methods represent plant water stress, with most implementing a water stress factor beta. Implementing new beta treatments that allow soil moisture to limit plant function non-linearly has been found to have significant implications for predicting water and carbon fluxes, especially under extreme climate conditions. This study demonstrates the need for more sophisticated modeling approaches to accurately simulate vegetation response to soil water stress and its impacts on climate prediction and response to climate change.

Summary: The global terrestrial carbon sink is increasing to offset a third of anthropogenic CO2 emissions, slowing down the growth of atmospheric CO2. CO2 fertilization has led to a significant increase in global photosynthesis, indicating a large impact of human activities on ecosystems worldwide.

Only sun-lit leaves of the uppermost canopy exceed both air temperature and photosynthetic thermal optima in a wet tropical forest

Benjamin D. Miller et al.

Summary: The study in a Puerto Rican tropical wet forest revealed that air temperature and vapor pressure deficit increased with height. Leaf temperature did not significantly differ across different heights, but the top canopy layer was significantly hotter than the rest of the foliage and air temperature. Sun-lit foliage and shaded foliage in tropical vegetation showed different thermoregulation strategies.

Experimental warming across a tropical forest canopy height gradient reveals minimal photosynthetic and respiratory acclimation

Kelsey R. Carter et al.

Summary: Based on in situ leaf-level experimental warming, tropical tree species in Puerto Rico made adjustments in response to temperature increase, with upper canopy leaves showing less acclimation to warmer temperatures. This lack of adaptation in the upper canopy could lead to reduced CO2 uptake and weaken the overall carbon sink strength of the tropical forest.

Accounting for canopy structure improves hyperspectral radiative transfer and sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence representations in a new generation Earth System model

Renato K. Braghiere et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the impact of incorporating an implicit clumping index into ESMs for global scale vegetation canopy representation on factors such as hyperspectral shortwave radiation partitioning and Sun-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF). Results show that considering canopy structural heterogeneity is critical for calculating hyperspectral radiation transfer accurately. Including vertical and horizontal canopy structure when deriving SIF can significantly improve model predictions.

Summary: The review summarizes the current methods of terrestrial biogeochemical cycle validation utilized by CMIP6 participants and concurrent community model comparison studies, focusing on evaluation dimensions, observation-based reference datasets, and model performance metrics. To ensure objective and thorough validations for the seventh phase of CMIP (CMIP7), a standard validation protocol employing a broad suite of certainty-weighted observation-based reference datasets, targeted model performance metrics, and comparisons across a range of spatiotemporal scales is recommended.

Improvement of modeling plant responses to low soil moisture in JULESvn4.9 and evaluation against flux tower measurements

Anna B. Harper et al.

Summary: Research has shown that three alternative approaches to calculating soil moisture stress produce more realistic results for most biomes and climates compared to the default parameterization. Increasing the number of soil layers and depth, using soil matric potential instead of volumetric water content, and allowing plants to access moisture in deeper soil layers all improve the simulation outcomes.
