Bioinspired ionic liquid-graphene based smart membranes with electrical tunable channels for gas separation

Januar Widakdo et al.

Summary: In this study, smart membrane materials composed of ionic liquid (IL), PVDF, and graphene were demonstrated, aiming for fast response and adjustable selectivity. The infusion of IL increased the beta crystal phase of PVDF, which was further assisted by the presence of graphene. The optimized membrane exhibited excellent CO2/N-2 selectivity and CO2 permeability, surpassing the theoretical upper bound. The mechanism of selective transportation of CO2 gas through the membrane was explored both theoretically and experimentally using PALS and DFT simulations.

Pebax-based membrane filled with photo-responsive Azo@NH2-MIL-53 nanoparticles for efficient SO2/N2 separation

Qingping Xin et al.

Summary: The preparation of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) using metal-organic framework (MOF) as fillers is an effective way to enhance the gas permeability and selectivity of membranes. In this study, NH2-MIL-53 nanoparticles were synthesized and modified with aminoazobenzene (Azo) to fabricate multifunctional Azo@NH2-MIL-53 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles were incorporated into the Pebax matrix to form MMMs for efficient and controllable SO2 separation. The incorporation of Azo@NH2-MIL-53 not only increased the specific surface area and pore size of NH2-MIL-53, but also enhanced the affinity and solubility selectivity of SO2. Moreover, the light-responsive characteristics of Azo allowed the conformation and adsorption capacity of NH2-MIL-53 to be controlled dynamically under different light conditions. Therefore, the mixed matrix membrane coupled with photo-responsive MOF holds great promise for achieving more efficient and energy-saving gas separation processes.
