Simpler Procedure and Improved Performance for Pathogenic Bacteria Analysis with a Paper-Based Ratiometric Fluorescent Sensor Array

Aayushi Laliwala et al.

Summary: Bacterial infections are a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. Researchers have developed a paper-based fluorescent sensor array that can accurately identify bacterial species and their Gram status. The sensor has high stability and requires lower sample and dye volumes compared to traditional methods.

Cross-tracking of faecal pollution origins, macronutrients, pharmaceuticals and personal care products in rural and urban watercourses

Lisa Paruch et al.

Summary: This study utilized microbial and chemical source tracking approaches to investigate water pollution in rural and urban catchments. The results showed that faecal contamination in urban streams predominantly originated from human sources, while non-human/environmental sources were prevalent in rural watercourses. Chemical contaminants of emerging concern were higher in urban streams compared to rural watercourses, with positive correlations found between pharmaceuticals and microbial/human DNA markers in urban areas. Additionally, macronutrients were strongly associated with primary faecal pollution origins in both watercourses, determining the main pollutant contributors to eutrophication.

Carbon Dot-NaCl Crystals for White-Light Generation and Fabry-Perot Lasing

Swayam Prakash et al.

Summary: Phosphor materials with broad spectral range and an average emission lifetime have been achieved from carbon dots-NaCl crystals, with fructose as the precursor showing the most intense emission. Utilizing ripe banana peel as the precursor, white-light emission with specific CIE index has been achieved from the single source of CDs-NaCl crystals, which also function as Fabry-Perot resonators for lasing with low laser threshold value and high Q-factor. This approach offers a new method for F-P lasing and white light emission from a non-toxic green source with a quick and low-cost synthesis procedure.

Understanding the photophysics of stercobilin-Zn(II) and urobilin-Zn(II) complexes towards faecal pigment analysis

Swayam Prakash et al.

Summary: A detailed photophysical study was conducted on two faecal pigments (UB and SB) and their zinc complexes, revealing that the fluorescence of UB and SB can be enhanced by the formation of Zn(II) complexes. The physicochemical environments play a significant role in influencing the fluorescence behavior of the Zn(II) complexes. Molecular orbital calculations provided insights into the geometry of the complexes and rationalized the fluorescence enhancement after complexation.

The structure and stability of faecal pigment-Zinc(II) complexes

Swayam Prakash et al.

Summary: This study provides an in-depth analysis of faecal pigment-zinc(II) complexes through spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and computational studies, revealing the formation of both 1:1 and 1:2 stoichiometries. This understanding is expected to aid in the development of analytical strategies for fluorescence-based analysis of faecal pigments, an important component of water quality analysis.

Photophysics of faecal pigments stercobilin and urobilin in aliphatic alcohols: introduction of a sensitive method for their detection using solvent phase extraction and fluorometry

Swayam Prakash et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new analytical paradigm for high sensitivity detection of fecal pigments (FPs) by fluorescence enhancement and background fluorescence minimization. The use of 1-hexanol as an efficient extraction medium for FPs is proposed, along with the complexation of FP-Zn(ii) in alcohol media to enhance fluorescence emission intensity and reduce interference, enabling the detection of FPs at picomolar to sub-picomolar concentrations. The study also examines the complexation behavior of FPs with various metal salts and validates the proposed analytical method using real water samples.

The synthesis of novel fluorescent bimetal nanoclusters for aqueous mercury detection based on aggregation-induced quenching

Fangfang Yu et al.

Summary: The new bimetal nanoclusters (DAMP-AuAg BNCs) synthesized with 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine (DAMP) showed strong fluorescent emission at 640 nm under 473 nm excitation, with specific and sensitive detection of Hg2+ in aqueous solution. The affinity of Hg2+ for nitrogen in the nanoclusters should also be considered. Due to their excellent performance, the DAMP-AuAg BNCs have potential as fluorescent sensors for mercury ions in water samples.
