Deciphering the Role of Amine Concentration on Polyamide Formation toward Enhanced RO Performance

Lu Elfa Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of m-phenylenediamine (MPD) concentration on the performance of thin film composite (TFC) polyamide membranes was investigated. It was found that the water permeance of the TFC membranes is affected by the thickness of the polyamide film and the formation of nanovoids. Optimal water permeance was observed at an intermediate MPD concentration, while better membrane rejection was achieved at higher MPD concentrations.

High Permeance or High Selectivity? Optimization of System-Scale Nanofiltration Performance Constrained by the Upper Bound

Zhe Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the permeability and selectivity of nanofiltration membranes and establishes the upper bound for state-of-the-art NF separation properties. It also examines the system-scale performance in relation to the upper bound, considering factors such as product water quality, energy consumption, and system stability. The findings suggest that an optimized NF system requires a combination of moderate permeability and selectivity. This work provides critical guidelines for the future development and optimization of NF membranes and systems.

Thickness-dependent permeance of molecular layer-by-layer polyamide membranes

William D. Mulhearn et al.

Summary: In this study, highly cross-linked polyamide (PA) membranes with thickness-dependent permeance were formed using a molecular layer-by-layer (mLbL) deposition process. The research revealed a critical thickness of 15 nm for efficient desalination and identified two distinct layers within the mLbL films. By controlling membrane thickness and utilizing a multi-layer solution diffusion model, the relationships among network structure, transport properties, and separation performance were elucidated.

Nanoscale control of internal inhomogeneity enhances water transport in desalination membranes

Tyler E. Culp et al.

Summary: Biological membranes achieve high permeabilities and ideal selectivities through well-defined nanoscale structures of membrane proteins. Polyamide desalination membranes can maximize water permeability without sacrificing salt selectivity by systematically controlling nanoscale polyamide inhomogeneity.

Membrane Materials for Selective Ion Separations at the Water-Energy Nexus

Ryan M. DuChanois et al.

Summary: This article evaluates the ion selectivity of conventional polymeric membrane materials and describes recent progress in enhancing selective transport through tailored free volume elements and ion-membrane interactions. To overcome the limitations of polymeric membranes, three material classes - porous crystalline materials, 2D materials, and discrete biomimetic channels - are highlighted as possible candidates for ion-selective membranes due to their molecular-level control over physical and chemical properties. Finally, research directions and critical challenges for developing bioinspired membranes with molecular recognition are provided.

Influence of Solute Molecular Diameter on Permeability-Selectivity Tradeoff of Thin-Film Composite Polyamide Membranes in Aqueous Separations

Xi Chen et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the underlying factors of the permeability-selectivity tradeoff relationship in thin-film composite polyamide (TFC-PA) membranes. The results show that the solute molecular diameter is a primary influence on the tradeoff, and a new transport regime weakly coupled to water transport is identified. This research demonstrates the applicability of the solution-diffusion framework to TFC-PA membranes and quantifies the principal role of solute size in governing RO transport.
