Adverse pregnancy and perinatal outcomes associated with Mycoplasma genitalium: systematic review and meta-analysis

Carole Frenzer et al.

Summary: The study suggests that Mycoplasma genitalium infection during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. Further research is needed to understand the role of M. genitalium in adverse pregnancy outcomes.

A specific bacterial DNA signature in the vagina of Australian women in midpregnancy predicts high risk of spontaneous preterm birth (the Predict1000 study)

Matthew S. Payne et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a vaginal microbial DNA test for Australian women in midpregnancy to identify those at increased risk of spontaneous preterm birth. A specific microbial DNA signature was identified that was strongly predictive of spontaneous preterm birth risk, and the final algorithm, called the Gardnerella Lactobacillus Ureaplasma (GLU) test, showed promising results in detecting women at risk of spontaneous preterm birth at <37 and <34 weeks' gestation. Adjusting for maternal demographics and clinical history did not improve prediction, with a history of spontaneous preterm birth being more effective in predicting spontaneous preterm birth than a GLU-positive result.

Are Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum Associated With Specific Genital Symptoms and Clinical Signs in Nonpregnant Women?

Erica L. Plummer et al.

Summary: The study found that only Mycoplasma hominis was associated with symptoms/signs in nonpregnant women, specifically related to bacterial vaginosis. Ureaplasma species were not associated with symptoms/signs. Therefore, routine testing for Mycoplasma hominis, Ureaplasma urealyticum, and Ureaplasma parvum in nonpregnant women is not supported.

Complex species and strain ecology of the vaginal microbiome from pregnancy to postpartum and association with preterm birth

Ryan M. Pace et al.

Summary: This study utilized metagenomics to analyze the vaginal microbial ecology during and post-pregnancy, resolving microbial species and strains, investigating the relationship between keystone species and preterm birth, exploring the influence of human heredity on vaginal microbial ecology, and examining the clinical utility of metagenomics for detecting pathobiont group B Streptococcus.

Adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes associated with Neisseria gonorrhoeae: systematic review and meta-analysis

Lisa M. Vallely et al.

Summary: Neisseria gonorrhoeae infection during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of preterm birth, premature rupture of membranes, perinatal mortality, low birth weight, and ophthalmia neonatorum. The risk of preterm birth is higher in low-income and middle-income countries compared to high-income countries. Further research is needed to understand the role of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in different perinatal mortality outcomes.
