Discussions of Fluorescence in Selenium Chemistry: Recently Reported Probes, Particles, and a Clearer Biological Knowledge

Ariq Abdillah et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the selected selenide reports and related chemistry from literature in the past 5 years, covering various applications of selenium in different fields, including physics, nanoscience, sensing, fluorescence, and solar energy conversion. It also discusses the role of selenium in therapeutics, medicinal chemistry, and skeleton cores, as well as its use as a constituent for small molecule sensors and probes. Additionally, the relationship between reduced selenium and oxidized selenium, along with the mention of free radicals and ROS, is addressed in the review.

Characterization of Selenium Compounds for Anti-ferroptotic Activity in Neuronal Cells and After Cerebral Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury

Qing-Zhang Tuo et al.

Summary: The emergence of ferroptosis as a cell death pathway associated with brain disorders highlights the importance of developing therapeutics targeting the brain and protecting neurons. Selenium compounds have shown to be effective in inhibiting ferroptosis, with organic selenium compounds like methylselenocysteine providing protection against neuronal damage in ischemia-reperfusion injury in vivo. This suggests the potential use of ferroptosis inhibitors and specific selenium compounds in preventing neuronal damage in ischemic stroke and other related brain diseases.
